The real story isn’t how the pork, or beef, or tomatoes make it into the tin can being mined by a Brazilian mother, but of the people involved with the production and how, while separated by national borders, they all seem connected in their lives. The Danish pig farmer loves his charges but longs for a wife and children; the Portuguese tomato picker works only to provide a future for her daughter; the Polish beef farmer rues his ex-wife, but adores his kids. This could be a story of how any supermarket-packaged meal is made, but instead it’s a study—not just of how certain items are produced, but also of the very humanity that sacrifices to provide. Lynn Stalmaster? Marion Dougherty? Or Juliet Taylor? If you’ve never heard these names, it’s because they belong to casting directors, the unsung heroes of Hollywood. CASTING BY is a fascinating look behind the scenes at the accomplishments of the (mostly) women who work closely with directors to find the perfect actors for the parts. Personalities such as Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, and Woody Allen talk about the vital role “master casters” play in the shaping of the creative vision. But CASTING BY is really a valentine to Marion Dougherty, the doyenne of “CD’s,” who began cajoling directors into accepting unknown faces in New York in the 1950s for the Kraft Television Theatre. Marion’s gut instinct and impressive Rolodex led her to help shape many of the industry’s finest films for over 50 years. She reluctantly agrees, uncomfortable with the idea of rural life. He ends up getting a job at the local high school where he meets Thibault, a strange student who offers to help around the farm. Feeling sorry for him, Vincent tries to bond with the troubled youth, inviting him over for dinner. Thibault quickly begins to wear out his welcome, driving a wedge between Vincent and Marie. Unhappy in her marriage, Marie begins to lead a precarious double life. As time goes by, details of Thibault’s mysterious background begin to surface, leading to questions about his intentions in friending the family. The lies they uncover will lead them to a harrowing realization. Filled with a heavy dose of twists and turns, CHAOS is a roller coaster ride that will thrill you until the very last second. CHASING RAINBOWS, a darkly funny commentary on the lengths people go to in their pursuit of the Romanian dream, intertwines the stories of two very different characters. Tocitu is a bureaucrat who hand-sharpens pencils and occasionally answers his rotary-dial phone. Someone delivers boxes marked “Hewlett-Packard,” but with no comprehension of English and no clue what’s in them, he’s fired. Tocitu signs up for a computer class and is soon an enthusiastic but naive PC convert. One day he makes out an English email saying he’s won the lottery. Meanwhile, a young slacker named Marius, who hangs out in bars, fills out a raffle ticket presented to him by a pretty girl. To his shock, he wins the jackpot…except that he wrote the name of his absent father on the winning ticket instead of his own. While scrambling to cash in their millions, Tocitu and Marius inadvertently make gains unrelated to money. CHASING RAINBOWS is a wickedly entertaining satire about the irony of chasing down impossible fortunes, while letting more realistic opportunities potentially slip away.
