His best friend is a lively piece of wood named Twigson who’s always making silly jokes. Junior’s mom works in a store where she loves to listen to royal gossip on the radio. It’s 1968 and everyone’s talking about the upcoming wedding of Crown Prince Harald to his bride. But there’s lots going on this summer: first, the new kid in town seems pretty mean; second, Junior’s friend Vesla has a new girl twig that sets Twigson’s knobby knees a-knocking. Then something terrible happens: Junior’s mom has a bike accident and lands in the hospital. What kind of bad person hits a mom on a bike? Junior and Twigson turn the town upside down to find out. Martin Lund’s TWIGSON TIES THE KNOT is a warm, gentle film that offers something for everyone, from animated twigs for the kindergarten set to a cool 60s vibe for their grownups. Now she leads a lonely life devoid of emotion. A nail tech in a Hispanic salon by day, by night Solimar seeks companionship with goodnatured Amalia, who is caring for his dying partner. Solimar’s world is colorless and muted; the Bronx snowdrifts pose a stark contrast to the tropics of her childhood. She is haunted by flashbacks to the terrifying moment when her abusive father abandoned her and walked into the sea. Alone in her apartment, Solimar becomes obsessed with listening in on her neighbors Roberto and Perpetue, a young Dominican couple who have loud fights and even louder sex. One night there’s a violent thump and all is still. Though increasingly convinced Roberto killed his wife, Solimar is fanatically attracted to him, and they begin a savage relationship she can’t escape. For the players, it provides notoriety and a possible ticket to a bigger world. For the community, it’s a source of pride. Filmed in Canton, Ohio, UNDERDOGS focuses on the Knights, a lousy team who’ve become an easy target for jokes. Just when they begin to give up hope, a new coach arrives, helping the lovable losers see their true potential. At the same time, quarterback Bobby Burkett falls in love with a cheerleader from a rival team, the Falcons. This enrages Falcons’ star, John Hanford, a bratty rich kid who has his eye on the same girl. Meanwhile, Bobby’s father is waging his own war with Hanford’s dad, whose crooked corporation is suing him over an invention he patented. UNDERDOGS ventures deeper than most films in the sports genre. Using football as a backdrop, director Doug Dearth has crafted a heartwarming film. Its message of believing in yourself, no matter the odds, will inspire the underdog in all of us. —E.F. Even from the beginning ACT UP was not a monolithic group; it acted as a magnet for the pain and rage of countless groups devastated by a new and terrifying killer. Through raw courage and brilliant planning, it channeled that rage into a force that brought awareness to the nation and forced action from pharmaceutical companies and even the government. Known mostly for its shocking tactics and protests, ACT UP was much more than many people realized. For the first time in history, an afflicted population took control of its epidemic and fought back. ACT UP members knew they had to document their own history and not let the mainstream media twist it.
