Downeast Directed by David Redmon, Ashley Sabin USA 2012 77 minutes Monday, April 8 Tuesday, April 9 9:20 PM I Code EAST08 2:15 PM I Code EAST09 When the Stinson Seafood plant closed its doors in 2010, nearly 130 people in Gouldsboro, Maine lost their jobs. The cannery was the last of its kind, a relic from a time when the sardine industry ruled the Maine coast. The unfortunate situation gives Boston businessman Antonio Bussone an idea: his company will reopen the plant as a lobster-packing facility and rescue the community from the unemployment line. It seems like the perfect solution. To sweeten the deal, Bussone is eligible for money from a $200,000 federal grant designed to help rebuild the local economy. But this is where everything hits a snag. The local government needs to approve the grant, and as it turns out, some of the politicians happen to work in the lobster industry. While the town shows its support for Bussone, the leaders constantly resist, putting their wallets before the good of the people. DOWNEAST follows Bussone as he struggles to make his business work. These days the internet is where many people discover and buy music. But, before Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning developed the program in 1999, that concept was unimaginable. Their peer-to-peer file sharing service allowed fans to share their music with the world, giving listeners access to an enormous library of songs with just a few clicks. However, there was one major problem: the service was free, therefore violating copyright laws and drawing ire from record labels and artists (Metallica and Dr. Dre famously opposed it, both filing lawsuits against the company). In 2000 Napster was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which led to a complete shutdown. Director Alex Winter provides a fascinatingly intimate look at Napster from the inside, capturing Parker and Fanning as they bloomed from nerdy college students to technological revolutionaries. ELEMENTAL tells the story of three such individuals as they work to save not only their homelands, but also the entire planet. Rajendra Singh is an Indian official who sets out on a trek to save the Ganges River. Once the lifeblood of India, “Mother Ganga” is now polluted by factories, dams, and public misuse, and Singh faces opposition from the very people he hopes to save. In Alberta, Canada, Eriel Deranger is a tireless warrior fighting to save her native land from the world’s largest industrial development—the Tar Sands. Jay Harmon is a brilliant Australian inventor who believes nature’s own systems can solve the planet’s ecological problems. As he searches for investors to back his creation, we get a feel for just how important it is to stop global warming and, perhaps, how close we are to slowing it down. After the failure of the Hungarian uprising, secret police become fixated with surveillance, constantly monitoring the actions of the people. They also conduct secret tests on their own members to assure that they are true believers in the Communist Party. Though his mentor and superior, Pal Marko, vouches for his trustworthiness, Jung’s loyalty is still put to the test. They bug his entire house and telephone, monitoring every conversation he has. Suspicions arise when Jung’s lover, Eva, visits him on Christmas Eve. Her involvement in the revolt of 1956 begins to raise flags. What are her intentions in dating Jung? Is she a spy sent to extract information? Marko, worried that Jung’s integrity will be compromised, desperately tries to fix the situation. But, as the paranoia mounts, it becomes harder to tell who’s on which side.
