Everyone knows Malala, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot
by the Taliban. Malala was attacked for voicing a simple principle:
all girls should go to school. There are thousands of girls
like Malala around the world who are standing up for their
voices to be heard and their right to be educated, and the
extraordinary GIRL RISING tells some of their stories. Wadly,
from Haiti, refuses to leave a post-earthquake tent school when
she can no longer pay. Suma, from Nepal, escapes bondage
when a kind teacher helps change her life. Senna, from Peru,
whose father died following a hard life as a miner, finds solace
in poetry. Removing barriers to girls’ education—early marriage,
sex trafficking, gender discrimination and violence, and
limited healthcare—means a better life for girls and a safer,
healthier world for us all. These brave young ladies are the
best proof that change is coming. Narrated by Anne Hathaway,
Selena Gomez, Meryl Streep, and more. (In English and
Spanish, Creole, and Arabic with subtitles) —B.B.
A wild and exotic blend of narrative and documentary styles,
THE GO DOC PROJECT is the video document of a relationship
between two young gay men in New York City. Days before
he graduates and leaves New York, “Doc” poses online as a
documentary filmmaker in order to meet “Go,” a hunky male
dancer he has become obsessed with on the internet. The ploy
works and Doc suddenly finds himself face-to-face with the hot
reality of his fantasy. Now, however, he has to move forward
with this purported documentary. Go is all for it and is very
willing to open up and be filmed with no boundaries. Doc finds
himself swept along by his own daring gamble. As we watch
both the documentary and the relationship unfold before our
eyes, we too are swept along by Doc’s seat-of-his-pants project
and the unexpected twists and turns it takes. Exuberantly
filmed and intensely erotic, this is a visual treat for the romantic
(and voyeur) in each of us. —C.R.
