The immigration debate in America is a heated one. It can
easily turn a family dinner table into a shouting match. But
what often gets lost in all the yelling is the simple fact that
immigrants are human beings. Their reasons for coming to
our country are often out of desperation and a need for survival.
As our leaders argue over how to solve the issue, they often
leave out the fact that our past interference in Central and
Latin American affairs has directly contributed to the influx
of Latinos coming to the United States. Based on the book by
journalist Juan Gonzalez, HARVEST OF EMPIRE investigates
how events like the Iran-Contra affair, the training of oppressive
militants at the School of the Americans, the Spanish-
American War, and America’s role in Castro’s rise to power
forced citizens of those countries to flee to safety within our
borders. This documentary goes beyond the surface and reveals
a part of the story that’s often left out of the conversation.
Zhaleh is a tough young Iranian woman living in Istanbul.
Dressed in biker black with kohl-rimmed eyes, she’s part of a
marginal club crowd and determined to emigrate to the West.
Hamed is a loose cannon, a crackhead graffiti artist also from
Iran, who never bothered to learn Turkish. They meet outside
a club, thrown together by their vague mutual need to escape.
Soon, a half-baked exit plan is devised. While Zhaleh buys
a passport and visa from a store in a crowded bazaar, Hamed
robs his uncle’s Persian rug shop. But their plans go awry,
and the young people run for it. Then, just when escape seems
possible, Zhaleh disappears. The nervous camera chases Hamed
through cacophonous bazaars, harbors, and junkyards as he
tries desperately to find her. Flashbacks and fantasies haunt
him; there are cries and whispers all around. Is life illusory,
or is he delusional? HATRED is a vivid example of new Iranian
cinema, an intriguingly edgy blend of fiction and reality.
