Therefore, the filmmakers brilliantly explore his superb legacy through the people who were most affected by his work: his adoring fans. Calvin & Hobbes was syndicated from 1985 to 1995 in over 24,000 newspapers. Every week, die-hards flipped straight to the funnies to see what hijinks the whimsical Calvin and his stuffed tiger friend would get into next. Watterson gave his characters great depth, stretching the limits of the panels and offering more complex stories than the average strip. After seeing great success, a demand grew to use his characters for merchandising—a concept that Watterson strongly stood against. In order to preserve the integrity of his stories, the cartoonist passed up the opportunity to make millions. DEAR MR. When the filmmakers ask customers if they know or care where the products were made, one man exclaims: “If the American people can’t provide me with what I need, I gotta get it from China.” While his statement seems callous, lots of Americans are willing to buy Chinese products if it brings savings. In today’s unstable economy, every little bit helps. But is it worth it to spend less on a television if that means putting your family member or friend out of a job? Are the savings worth it if they’re driving our country into debt and threatening our security? This film examines the political decisions that have brought us to such a dilemma and evaluates companies who’ve stooped low for high profits. It also looks at our own role as consumers. From there this brilliantly original and (trust us) funny film simply lets the camera roll. In one continuous sequence, we watch as neighbors enter drawn by the gunshot and as the ensuing chaos and reactions to sudden death are mercilessly captured. We quickly discover those reactions to be very self-centered and opportunistic as neighbors hang about waiting for the authorities. They begin drinking toasts to the man’s memory and speculating profoundly about the life of someone whom nobody actually seemed to know. Shrewdly observant, darkly satirical, and often outright hilarious, this film skews the formal rituals of death that we perform. When the authorities at last begin to wander in, the film escalates to delicious levels of absurdity echoing the Marx Brothers and Monty Python. With humor as dark as a funeral shroud, this is a completely unique cinematic treat you do not want to miss. (In Serbian with subtitles) —C.R. With terrifying swiftness, the crew begins to drown or succumb to hypothermia. Suddenly, only a single fisherman is left. Gulli is treading water under a cold moon in freezing temperatures, uncertain where or how far away the nearest land is. The only thing he is certain of is that he is completely alone and the precious minutes of his life are few unless he is rescued. Filmed with glacial beauty, this film focuses on Gulli’s desperate minute-by-minute struggle to survive in the harshest of circumstances.
