The slums of an abandoned Argentinean TB hospital built in<br />
the 30s sets the stage for this gritty drama from one of South<br />
America’s most acclaimed directors, Pablo Trapero. Father<br />
Nicolas (played daringly by Belgian actor Jeremie Renier) and<br />
Father Julian work side-by-side in these slums to help build<br />
the hospital for the community. Facing gang wars between<br />
drug cartels and a bureaucratic church trying to politicize the<br />
martyrdom of famed comrade Father Carlos Mujica, the priests<br />
find themselves in an uphill battle as they try to navigate their<br />
mission in a war zone. While Julian battles an illness, Nicolas<br />
is shadowed by survivor’s guilt and his new affection for the<br />
social worker Luciana (the mesmerizing Martina Gusman).<br />
With superb ensemble acting and inspired direction by Trapero,<br />
WHITE ELEPHANT is a powerful and poignant drama of faith<br />
and spirituality. As the powers against the brave men come to<br />
a head, it becomes more and more clear that, in this world,<br />

About the Director~Born in Buenos Aires, Pablo Trapero has been nominated for<br />

Out of the primordial mists lumbers a beast that lives in legend<br />
among soldiers on both sides of the Russian front. WHITE<br />
TIGER is the ultimate Nazi killing machine—a giant tank<br />
that materializes out of nowhere and obliterates Soviet troops,<br />
leaving in its wake the charred corpses of men and machines.<br />
A tank operator is pried out of the wreckage of one such battle,<br />
90% of his body burned. Left by medics to die, he heals<br />
miraculously. With no memory of his previous life, he knows<br />
only that WHITE TIGER must be killed. Like Captain Ahab<br />
after Moby Dick or Quint after the White Shark, the tank man<br />
single-mindedly pursues his prey. Preternaturally calm in the<br />
face of horrifying battles, he’s a tank whisperer who hears the<br />
armor-clad giants speak. His comrades believe he burned to<br />
death and was reborn as a soldier ideally suited for war.<br />
