FAR OUT ISN’T FAR ENOUGH is not your typical documentary
about an illustrator and author of children’s books. In fact, the
word “typical” could never be used to describe anything about
Tomi Ungerer. Born in France, he lived through the German
occupation of Alsace, an experience that had a profound
impact on his career as an artist. Moving to New York in the
1950s, he ruffled feathers in the industry by creating books
that some found to be too harsh and strange for kids. Later, he
began making sexually explicit books for adults, which prompted
a controversy that eventually led to his books being banned.
The censorship turned his creativity into a tool of activism and
he began illustrating political posters, most notably against the
war in Vietnam. FAR OUT ISN’T FAR ENOUGH gets deep into
Ungerer’s mind and makes it perfectly clear: he’s one of a kind.
But it’s that uniqueness that makes his work so incredibly
brilliant. Tomi Ungerer is who he is and instead of fearing it,
this film celebrates it loudly. —E.F.
In France surrogacy is strictly forbidden. So when partners
Jerome and Francois are looking to become fathers, they must
search for the most liberal of places; a place where two gay
lovers from France may make a baby with a woman they have
never met; a place of such liberalism, they will be accepted
and given the opportunity to prosper as a loving family:
Wisconsin. FATHER’S BIRTH is a journey of love and discovery
as Jerome and Francois travel to America to meet with Colleen,
her husband, and their three children and get to know the
woman who is going to make their dreams of fatherhood a reality.
Touching, heartwarming, and whimsical, this film follows these
two men between France and America, illustrating that nine
months of waiting only proves that love knows no boundaries—
geographical or social. Incredibly charming at its core,
FATHER’S BIRTH gives the audience an intimate look at the
greatest gift a person can give another: life. (In English and
French with subtitles) —T.W.
