Joe Frolik joined The Plain Dealer editorial board in 2001 and became the
newspaper’s chief editorial writer in 2009. Before switching to the opinion
staff, he was a reporter for almost 20 years, spending a majority of that time
as The Plain Dealer’s national correspondent. Joe grew up in a small town
west of Chicago, graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of
Journalism, and worked for newspapers in Texas and California before coming
to Cleveland. He lives in Cleveland Heights with his wife Karen R. Long, who
manages the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards for the Cleveland Foundation. One of
the reasons they chose their home: It’s an easy walk to the Cedar Lee Theatre.
Henry J. Gomez has been a reporter at The Plain Dealer for eight years.
He currently covers state and national politics and was the newspaper’s lead
writer for the 2012 presidential election. His coverage of local government
has won numerous awards, including 1st Place in Government Reporting from
the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. A Youngstown, Ohio native, his
first published work came while he was in the third grade when he reviewed
“Young Einstein” for a local family newspaper. His writing skills (and his taste
in films) have matured since then. Henry lives in Avon Lake with his wife, a
high school social studies teacher.
Michelle Jarboe McFee writes about real estate and development for
The Plain Dealer. A Michigan native, Michelle previously covered business
for the News & Record in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has also appeared
on public radio and public television. Her love of film began with a starring
role in the mid-1980s home movie “Michelle Falls Off the Balance Beam”
and continues today with her frequent consumption and nuanced criticism of
popcorn. She lives in downtown Cleveland with her graphic-designer husband
and two cats.
The Cleveland International Film Festival salutes and
thanks The Plain Dealer for the important public service
that it provides to our community. We are proud to
empanel this jury entirely of representatives from our
daily newspaper.
