The Student Handbook contains information <strong>of</strong> great significance to <strong>the</strong> students <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong>.<br />
Every <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> student should make himself familiar with <strong>the</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> this student handbook. Since<br />
this bulletin includes regulations with respect to student conduct, and since every student may avail himself <strong>of</strong> a copy, each<br />
student is expected to abide by <strong>the</strong> standards and regulations set forth in this publication.<br />
Failure to receive a Student Handbook does not excuse <strong>the</strong> student from abiding by <strong>the</strong> rules and regulations as written<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Handbook.<br />
Clubs and Organizations<br />
Students have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities; among <strong>the</strong>se are American Chemical<br />
Society, American Choral Directors Association, Appalachian Ministries (Special Children’s Ministry), Art Club, Beta Beta<br />
Beta (Biology), Baptist Campus Ministries, BCM Creative Ministries, Missions Committee, Freshman Fire, Campus Activity<br />
Board, Women on Mission,Council for Exceptional Children, Fellowship <strong>of</strong> Christian Athletes, F.R.I.E.N.D.S.(Non- Traditional<br />
Students), Gamma Sigma Pi, Intramural Activities, Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Physics Club, Mu Phi Epsilon (Music), N.E.A.S.P.,<br />
HSB Business Club, Psychology Club, Residence Hall Council, Sociology/Social Work Club, Sports Medicine Club, Student<br />
Admissions Staff, Student Alumni Relations Council, Student Government Association, and a number <strong>of</strong> academic honors<br />
societies.<br />
Student Publications<br />
Students at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to contribute to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> newspaper, The Patriot;<br />
to Pensworth, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> literary magazine; and to <strong>the</strong> Upsilonian, <strong>the</strong> History Department publication.<br />
Athletics<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> is proud <strong>of</strong> its tradition as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaders in small univeristy sports programs.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> has intercollegiate men’s and women’s teams in basketball, golf, tennis, track and cross-country, soccer,<br />
swimming, and wrestling as well as intercollegiate teams in baseball, football, s<strong>of</strong>tball, and volleyball.<br />
Intramural Activities<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Intramural Sports program at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> is to provide a wide variety <strong>of</strong> activities<br />
to meet <strong>the</strong> recreational and competitive needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> student body.<br />
Flag football, Basketball (5 on 5), and Basketball (3 on 3) are provided for both men and women. Volleyball, Miniature<br />
Golf, Cornhole, ultimate frisbee are provided for men and women on <strong>the</strong> same team (Co-Ed). These are <strong>the</strong> core sports that<br />
are provided throughout <strong>the</strong> year, but feedback from <strong>the</strong> student body can help in providing additional sports if <strong>the</strong> request<br />
is initiated by <strong>the</strong> student body.<br />
Each sport that is <strong>of</strong>fered will ei<strong>the</strong>r have a season or a one day tournament. Depending on how many teams that<br />
are involved in a particular sport will determine how long <strong>the</strong> season may be. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each season <strong>the</strong>re will be a<br />
tournament to determine a championship team or champion as <strong>the</strong> program progresses. Each team or individual winner<br />
will receive a championship t-shirt.<br />
Schedules <strong>of</strong> games, notice <strong>of</strong> special events, and announcements are posted on <strong>the</strong> Intramural Sports Board located<br />
in <strong>the</strong> lobby <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boswell Campus Center. Rosters can now be printed from <strong>the</strong> web.<br />
No <strong>University</strong> credit is given for intramural athletics but all students are encouraged to participate.<br />
Special Services<br />
Academic Resource Center-The Academic Resource Center <strong>of</strong>fers free and convenient tutoring in all academic subjects<br />
to all <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> students. The Director and staff <strong>of</strong> trained tutors are available daily to provide courteous<br />
service to all students seeking to improve competencies through individualized or computerized assistance. All students are<br />
encouraged to take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opportunities available in <strong>the</strong> ARC early in each semester. The Academic Resource<br />
Center is located in <strong>the</strong> basement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> library and is open Monday through Thursday 9-5 and 6-9 p.m., and from 9-4 on<br />
Friday.<br />
Orientation-INSIGHTS–INST 101, is a half-credit course, taken during <strong>the</strong> student’s first semester and is designed to give<br />
all freshmen and transfers with fewer than thirty hours an orientation to college life. It has a three-pronged focus: to provide<br />
group-building activities so that students feel more comfortable on campus, to help students streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir study skills<br />
and improve <strong>the</strong>ir understanding <strong>of</strong> campus services, and to introduce students to <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> a liberal arts education.<br />
