music, cinema, and television. The primary focus <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong>fering may change from semester to semester to include, but not be<br />

limited to, <strong>the</strong> pioneers, <strong>the</strong> town tamers, gunfighters and lawmen, ranching, and frontier women. Prerequisite: junior standing.<br />

This Integrated Studies course can fulfill a requirement in Section IVA <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Education Curriculum. Credit, 3 hours.<br />

HIST 430. Selected Topics<br />

The detailed study <strong>of</strong> a particular historical subject. This course may be substituted for an upper level American History<br />

course or a non-American History course, depending upon <strong>the</strong> topic, with <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s advisor and <strong>the</strong><br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department. Credit, 3 hours. Offered as needed.<br />

HIST 431. Early America<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transit <strong>of</strong> civilization from Europe to British North America; <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> American life within <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Empire; and <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Revolution, including <strong>the</strong> writing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States Constitution. Prerequisite:<br />

HIST 231 or consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> instructor. Credit, 3 hours. Offered fall semester, even years.<br />

HIST 433. Expansion and <strong>the</strong> Civil War Era<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> westward expansion and <strong>the</strong> origins <strong>of</strong> conflict between <strong>the</strong> North and <strong>the</strong> South. It will also focus on <strong>the</strong> war<br />

itself and its effects on <strong>the</strong> re-united nation. Prerequisite: HIST 231 and 232. Credit, 3 hours. Offered fall semester, odd years.<br />

HIST 435. Twentieth-Century America<br />

The major focus <strong>of</strong> this course will be <strong>the</strong> 1920s through <strong>the</strong> 1960s. Special attention will be given to <strong>the</strong> changes in<br />

societal thinking about politics, foreign policy and American economic development. O<strong>the</strong>r topics will also be considered as<br />

time permits. Prerequisite: HIST 232 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Credit, 3 hours. Offered spring semester, odd years.<br />

HIST 436. The Renaissance and <strong>the</strong> Reformation<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> transformation <strong>of</strong> western Europe from medievalism to modernity, with stress on <strong>the</strong> disruption <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

unity <strong>of</strong> Roman Christendom and <strong>the</strong> resulting reaction. Prerequisites: HIST 137 or consent <strong>of</strong> instructor. Credit, 3 hours.<br />

HIST 437. Russia<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> Russian life from <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> Muscovy to <strong>the</strong> present with special attention given to <strong>the</strong> following topics: <strong>the</strong><br />

developing contacts with <strong>the</strong> west, <strong>the</strong> eighteenth century expansion, <strong>the</strong> revolution <strong>of</strong> 1917, and <strong>the</strong> Soviet period. O<strong>the</strong>r<br />

topics may be examined from time to time. Prerequisites: HIST 137, and HIST 138 or consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> instructor. Credit, 3<br />

hours. Offered fall semester, even years.<br />

HIST 490. Issues in History<br />

This course will allow a student to examine a problem in history thoroughly. The student will select, research, and<br />

analyze <strong>the</strong> problem and draw conclusions from it. This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered only in <strong>the</strong> fall semester, and a student must<br />

have completed Historical Methods (HIST 234) successfully. This course is open to senior majors only. Credit, 3 hours.<br />

Offered fall semester, every year.<br />

POLS 131. Introduction to Political Science<br />

A significant <strong>the</strong>me <strong>of</strong> this course is <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> what makes for good government and citizenship. Contemporary<br />

domestic and international issues facing citizens will be discussed. The study <strong>of</strong> political science as a discipline will be<br />

introduced with emphasis on its history, scope, method, and development as well as detailed study <strong>of</strong> major fields <strong>of</strong> political<br />

science. Credit, 3 hours. Offered every semester.<br />

POLS 230. Introduction to Law and Legal Education<br />

This course will help aspiring law students to know what to expect in law school, to examine potential legal careers, to<br />

prepare to take <strong>the</strong> Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT), and to gain practical knowledge in skills essential to success in law<br />

school, including writing briefs, locating and understanding case law, using libraries and Internet legal resources. Various<br />

legal landmark cases will be examined and <strong>the</strong> class will engage in mock trial or moot court. Recommended for juniors and<br />

seniors considering law school. Offered fall semesters.<br />

POLS 233. American National Government<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> American politics with emphases on <strong>the</strong> structure and functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> national government, as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

activities <strong>of</strong> citizens, political parties, interest groups, and media.<br />

POLS 234. State and Local Government<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> structures, functions, institutions and policies <strong>of</strong> state and local governments in <strong>the</strong> United States with special<br />

attention given to Kentucky government and politics. Credit, 3 hours. Offered spring semesters, odd years.<br />
