HESS 491. Special Topics in Health, Exercise and Sport Science<br />

This course is designed to provide information that is <strong>of</strong> particular interest to <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> Health, Exercise and Sport<br />

Science fields. Topics will vary. Course may be repeated with different topics. Credit, 3 hours. Offered as needed.<br />

EXERCISE AND SPORT SCIENCE<br />

ACTIVITY COURSES<br />

ESS majors are encouraged to enroll in three (3) different activity courses during <strong>the</strong>ir academic career. Only three<br />

hours credit can be applied to <strong>the</strong> total hours for <strong>the</strong> major and does not apply to <strong>the</strong> minor. Athletes will not be allowed to<br />

register for an activity course that is <strong>the</strong> same sport in which <strong>the</strong>y have earned varsity participation credit.<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> Courses<br />

ESS 000. Intercollegiate Sports Participation<br />

Credit earned by athletes for full season participation in a varsity sport. Credit is awarded on a one-time basis only.<br />

Credit, 1 hour. Offered fall and spring semesters.<br />

ESS 001. Basketball<br />

This course covers <strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> basketball. Emphasis is placed on skill development, knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules,<br />

and basic game strategy. Upon completion, students should be able to participate in recreational basketball. Credit, 1 hour.<br />

Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 002. Beginning Swimming<br />

This course is designed for non-swimmers and beginners. Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in <strong>the</strong> water,<br />

water safety, flotation skills and learning elementary strokes. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 003. Intermediate Swimming<br />

This course is designed for individuals who have basic swimming skills. Emphasis is placed on refining basic skills<br />

and learning new swim strokes. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate <strong>the</strong> four basic strokes: butterfly,<br />

freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 004. Ballroom Dancing<br />

This course introduces <strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> ballroom dances. Emphasis is placed on basic dance techniques, dances and<br />

a brief history <strong>of</strong> ballroom dance. Upon completion students should be able to demonstrate specific dance skills and perform<br />

dances such as <strong>the</strong> swing, foxtrot, waltz and chacha. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 005. Soccer<br />

Introduction to <strong>the</strong> basics <strong>of</strong> soccer. Emphasis is placed on rules, strategies and fundamental skills. Upon completion<br />

<strong>the</strong> student should be able to participate in recreational soccer. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 006. Tennis<br />

This course emphasizes <strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> tennis. Topics include basic strokes, rules, etiquette and court play. Upon<br />

completion, students should be able to play recreational tennis. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 007. Walking<br />

This course emphasizes <strong>the</strong> physical, mental and social benefits <strong>of</strong> walking. Covers <strong>the</strong> basic concepts involved in<br />

safely and effectively improving cardiovascular fitness through walking. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 008. Weight Training<br />

An introduction to <strong>the</strong> basics <strong>of</strong> weight training. Emphasis is placed on developing muscle strength, muscle endurance<br />

and muscle tone. Upon completion, students should be able to establish and implement a lifetime personal weight training<br />

program. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 009. Volleyball<br />

This course covers <strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> volleyball. Emphasis is placed on basic skills, rules and etiquette <strong>of</strong> volleyball.<br />

Upon completion, students should be able to participate in recreational volleyball. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />

ESS 010. Whiffle Ball<br />

This course introduces <strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> whiffle ball. Emphasis is placed on skill development, knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules and basic game strategy. Credit, 1 hour. Offered as needed.<br />
