THTR 401. Post-WWII European Drama<br />
This course will consider <strong>the</strong> historical and social trends embedded within <strong>the</strong> non-realistic <strong>the</strong>atre movements in Europe<br />
after <strong>the</strong> Second World War. The course will ask students to understand <strong>the</strong> cultural fabric that was constructed in Europe<br />
after 1945. Students will read works by major International playwrights during this time period including: Harold Pinter,<br />
Vaclav Havel, Fernando Arrabal, and Tom Stoppard. In addition to reading examples from dramatic literature, students will<br />
read supporting scholarly essays which contextualize <strong>the</strong> course’s selected playwrights. This Integrated Studies course can<br />
fulfill a requirement in Section V <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Education Curriculum. Credit, 3 hours.<br />
THTR 410. Theatre Practicum<br />
Practical experience is provided through involvement in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> Theatre productions. This<br />
course may be repeated to fulfill requirements. Credit, 1 hour. Offered every semester.<br />
THTR 417. Character Improvisation Lab for Theatre in Diversion<br />
Supervised practical experience in creating a <strong>the</strong>atre company and mentoring young artists. Participants will teach drama<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Court Designated Worker Program to area juvenile participants, using <strong>the</strong>atre improvisation to teach individual wellbeing,<br />
acceptance <strong>of</strong> social rules, and good decision-making skills to juvenile participants and oversee <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> a class<br />
showcase. Prerequisite: completion or current enrollment in THTR 437. Credit, 1 hour. Offered spring semester <strong>of</strong> even years.<br />
THTR 418. Senior Colloquium<br />
All majors are required to demonstrate <strong>the</strong>ir expertise through a public presentation during one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last two semesters<br />
before graduation. The subject will be <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s choosing with departmental approval. Each student will work closely<br />
with a Communication and Theatre Arts faculty mentor who specializes in <strong>the</strong> chosen subject. Students may choose to<br />
showcase <strong>the</strong>ir skills in <strong>the</strong> performing arts or may choose to present a paper detailing research <strong>the</strong>y have conducted.<br />
Students must present <strong>the</strong>ir work before an audience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Communication and Theatre Arts faculty. This presentation<br />
serves as <strong>the</strong> exiting examination for <strong>the</strong> department. Credit, 1 hour. Offered every semester.<br />
THTR 431. Principles <strong>of</strong> Directing<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory and practice <strong>of</strong> directing plays, including selection <strong>of</strong> material, script analysis, casting, blocking,<br />
and actor-director relationships. Recommended prerequisites include THTR131 and THTR 235 or Instructor’s permission.<br />
Credit, 3 hours. Offered spring semester <strong>of</strong> even years.<br />
THTR 433. Theatre History<br />
A survey <strong>of</strong> dramatic art and history from its earliest beginnings to <strong>the</strong> present. Credit, 3 hours. Offered spring semester <strong>of</strong> odd years.<br />
THTR 435. Arts Administration<br />
A course considering topics within <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> arts administration. This course will expose students to <strong>the</strong> operational,<br />
financial, and administrative tasks within an arts organization (such as <strong>the</strong>atre, opera, and dance). The course will refine<br />
students’ ability to express <strong>the</strong> financial impact <strong>of</strong> artistic endeavors. Prerequisite: THTR 130 or instructor’s permission.<br />
Credit, 3 hours. Offered spring semesters <strong>of</strong> odd years.<br />
THTR 437. Character Improvisation<br />
This course is a highly focused study for <strong>the</strong> advanced acting student, which uses research methods and techniques in<br />
conjunction with improvisation to explore characterization. Prerequisite: THTR 131 and THTR 232. Credit, 3 hours. Offered<br />
spring semester <strong>of</strong> even years.<br />
THTR 490. Independent Study in Theatre<br />
An independent study course designed to provide students with fur<strong>the</strong>r work in an area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir choice. Credit, 3 hours.<br />
Offered as needed.<br />
THTR 491. Internship<br />
This course is designed to provide students with <strong>the</strong> opportunity to earn academic credit for pr<strong>of</strong>essional work experience<br />
in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> technical <strong>the</strong>atre, scenic and lighting design and acting. Three, six or twelve academic hours can be earned,<br />
depending on <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> approved internship and <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s advisor. Students<br />
cannot register for THTR 491 until <strong>the</strong>y have successfully completed all appropriate applications and interviews leading<br />
to <strong>the</strong> securing <strong>of</strong> an internship. This course is <strong>of</strong>fered on an arranged basis. Prerequisite: Junior or senior status and<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s advisor.<br />
THTR 492. Special Topics in Theatre<br />
This course is designed to allow students to enroll in classes that are not normally scheduled. Suggested topics<br />
include: Theatre in Education, Masks, Costumes, Acting Technique, Puppetry, Playwriting, Creative Drama, Scene Painting,<br />
Computer Aided Design, Prop Construction, and o<strong>the</strong>rs as interest is expressed. May be repeated once for credit when <strong>the</strong><br />
topic varies. Credit, 3 hours. Offered as needed.<br />
