THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES<br />

Human Services Program<br />

Purpose Statement<br />

The Human Services Program provides students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to develop <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> knowledge and skills<br />

required to work within <strong>the</strong> helping pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The Department’s curriculum emphasizes course work that enhances<br />

self-awareness and increases understanding <strong>of</strong> personal values, while fostering appreciation <strong>of</strong> diversity and <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong><br />

humanity. Education is provided in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional helping skills, behavioral <strong>the</strong>ory, and current social issues.<br />

Students are equipped to conduct ethical practice, establish appropriate boundaries, and apply <strong>the</strong>ir skills within pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

environments that <strong>of</strong>fer services to people.<br />

Program Goals<br />

1. To facilitate an appreciation <strong>of</strong> self-awareness and <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> humanity, especially as this relates to <strong>the</strong> variety <strong>of</strong><br />

human services careers.<br />

2. To provide students with a core knowledge base in human behavior <strong>the</strong>ory, research methods, and social welfare policy<br />

in preparation for a career and/or graduate study.<br />

3. To promote understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human services perspective related to individuals, groups, and communities.<br />

4. To integrate healthy pr<strong>of</strong>essional boundaries and best ethical practices within a human services capacity.<br />

5. To demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>essional helping skills within <strong>the</strong> classroom and apply <strong>the</strong> skills within a pr<strong>of</strong>essional environment.<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Lifelong Learning. Students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> online baccalaureate programs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s School <strong>of</strong> Lifelong<br />

Learning (SLL) should consult SLL publications and <strong>the</strong>ir academic advisor for <strong>the</strong> availability and rotation <strong>of</strong> courses<br />

available for <strong>the</strong>m in an online format.<br />

Requirements for <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science with a Major in Human Services – 36 hours<br />

HSRV 435 Ethics in Human Services<br />

HSRV 461* Internship and Seminar (6 hours)<br />

HSRV 235 Human Behavior in <strong>the</strong> Social Environment I: Conception through Adolescence<br />

*Internship is a required course for <strong>the</strong> major and is viewed as an invaluable tool to prepare students for employment in<br />

human services. The Human Services Department reserves <strong>the</strong> right to require alternative coursework in lieu <strong>of</strong> internship<br />

placement when <strong>the</strong> Department feels this is in <strong>the</strong> best interest <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> student or <strong>the</strong> Department. Any student with<br />

extenuating and verifiable circumstances which may prevent him/her from successfully completing an internship placement<br />

may complete an Internship Exclusion Application and submit it to <strong>the</strong> Department Chair for consideration.<br />

**HSRV 335 Social Research is recommended for students going on to graduate school.<br />

NOTE: Courses used as part <strong>of</strong> a concentration area (below) cannot be counted in <strong>the</strong> 36-hour Core.<br />

Requirements for <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science with a CONCENTRATION in Human Services – 54 hours<br />

NOTE: Students completing a concentration in Human Services do not need to complete a minor in order to graduate.<br />
