and miscellaneous smaller areas.<br />

Nicholson-Jones Building-This is a large three-story brick building, facing <strong>the</strong> Dr. A. Gatliff Memorial Administration<br />

Building. Nicholson-Jones houses <strong>the</strong> Football Office and Baseball Office.<br />

Perkins House-The Admissions Office is housed in <strong>the</strong> renovated Norman Perkins House, located on Walnut Street.<br />

President’s Home-The Ruby Gatliff Archer President’s Home, a brick colonial style building, west <strong>of</strong> Gillespie Hall on<br />

Main Street, was a gift to <strong>the</strong> college in 1962 by Mrs. Ruby Gatliff Archer. The home, built around 1905, is a replica <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

“Kentucky Home” exhibited in <strong>the</strong> St. Louis, Missouri 1904 World’s Fair. Every effort has been made to keep <strong>the</strong> home as<br />

an example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> style, furnishings, and gracious living <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period.<br />

Robinson Hall-Robinson Hall completed in 1963, houses 88 men. The building is named in honor <strong>of</strong> E.O. Robinson.<br />

O. Wayne Rollins Center-The O. Wayne Rollins Center is <strong>the</strong> focal point on <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> campus with<br />

over 105,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> floor space. The main arena, with 1,670 fixed seats, is a magnificent setting for convocation,<br />

concerts, basketball and special programs. The space on <strong>the</strong> floor and <strong>the</strong> top concourse will allow seating for an additional<br />

1,200 people. The arena area also includes a walking track, a hospitality room, an audio-visual control room, men’s and<br />

women’s varsity basketball dressing rooms, concession area, a game <strong>of</strong>ficials room, and various <strong>of</strong>fices for <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> athletic staff. This area is also wired to broadcast live radio and television. The focal point <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stage area is <strong>the</strong> 10<br />

foot by 35 foot stained glass window illustrating Cumberland’s commitment to God and to <strong>the</strong> students from <strong>the</strong> Appalachian<br />

region. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest electronic organs in <strong>the</strong> region, donated by Mr. Tom Raper, is housed on <strong>the</strong> stage area. The<br />

middle level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O. Wayne Rollins Center contains three classrooms, <strong>the</strong> mechanical room, storage room and an entrance<br />

to <strong>the</strong> middle level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> older structure. The lower level houses a 25 meter swimming pool, men’s and women’s dressing<br />

areas, <strong>the</strong> entrance to <strong>the</strong> football locker room, and <strong>the</strong> entrance to <strong>the</strong> weight room.<br />

Siler Hall-A men’s dormitory that was completed in July <strong>of</strong> 1985 and houses approximately 100 men.<br />

Smiddy Learning Resource Center- Named in honor <strong>of</strong> J. Charles Smiddy, this facility includes <strong>the</strong> Norma Jean Hagan<br />

Perkins Library. Also within <strong>the</strong> Smiddy Learning Center is <strong>the</strong> Gibson Distance Learning Center. The Gibson Center is<br />

equipped with an AT&T PicturTel interactive video system which provides a land network with any video conference room in<br />

<strong>the</strong> world. The lower level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Smiddy Center houses faculty <strong>of</strong>fices and classrooms for <strong>the</strong> Human Services Department,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Academic Resource Center (ARC), <strong>the</strong> Assessment Office and <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Teaching and Learning.<br />

Taylor Stadium-The Jim Taylor II Stadium was constructed in <strong>the</strong> Summer <strong>of</strong> 1994. The athletic facilities include a football<br />

field, eight-lane track, and football practice field. The Stadium will seat 2,400, with facilities for special guests, press box<br />

area, and locker rooms for home and visiting teams. There is parking adjacent to <strong>the</strong> stadium.<br />

STUDENT LIFE, ACTIVITIES<br />

AND SPECIAL SERVICES<br />

Student Government Association<br />

The Student Government Association represents <strong>the</strong> student body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The Association consists <strong>of</strong> three<br />

branches, judicial, executive, and legislative which includes dormitory men, dormitory women, and commuting students.<br />

Its threefold purpose is (1) To arouse and maintain enthusiastic interest in and a spirit <strong>of</strong> loyalty to <strong>the</strong> various activities<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. (2) To assume leadership in regulating and promoting <strong>the</strong> extra-curricular and social activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. (3) To assume leadership in promoting and improving student life on <strong>the</strong> campus, creating a congenial relationship,<br />

understanding and spirit among <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> university community, both student and faculty.<br />

Religious Life<br />

Campus Ministries at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberlands</strong> include a variety <strong>of</strong> opportunities for students to grow on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

faith journey. Through Baptist Campus Ministries (BCM), students participate in local, state and national events for spiritual<br />

growth and service. Campus Ministries is led by <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> Campus Ministries, <strong>the</strong> Associate Director, and <strong>the</strong> student<br />

leaders involved in each ministry area. The Office <strong>of</strong> Campus Ministries is housed in <strong>the</strong> Angel-Dale House.<br />

Through BCM, students can serve on ministry teams that lead in worship, creative ministries, nursing home visitation, community<br />

outreach, campus outreach, random acts <strong>of</strong> kindness, c<strong>of</strong>feehouse, media, missions, publicity and o<strong>the</strong>r teams. Additionally, on<br />

Thursdays at 8:00 PM, students ga<strong>the</strong>r for worship, <strong>the</strong>n small groups, which are a wonderful way to build meaningful friendships<br />

and grow spiritually in community. All students are encouraged to participate, regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir denominational affiliation or<br />

heritage. Revival services are held each fall and spring, and mission projects take place during winter break, spring break, and<br />

summer. Appalachian Ministries and Mountain Outreach are unique ministries at UC where students may serve children, youth,<br />

and families in <strong>the</strong> area in a hands-on approach, whe<strong>the</strong>r building or repairing homes, or leading in Vacation Bible Schools. All<br />

ministries are interdenominational in scope, though <strong>the</strong>y are undergirded by Baptist tradition.<br />

<strong>University</strong> Regulations<br />

Students admitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> are subject to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s rules and regulations. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se may be found<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s <strong>Catalog</strong> and in <strong>the</strong> Student Handbook which are available online and for review in <strong>the</strong> admissions <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />
