THE DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE<br />
Purpose Statement<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> a major in criminal justice is to prepare graduates for a career within <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> corrections and criminal<br />
justice. The program will enable students to communicate and practice effectively with clients and colleagues so that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
may pursue lives <strong>of</strong> responsible service and leadership.<br />
Program Goals<br />
1. To provide students with a core knowledge base in criminal justice in order to prepare <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir chosen careers within <strong>the</strong><br />
justice field and/or graduate studies.<br />
2. To enhance understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>of</strong> society and law enforcement in response to deviant behavior.<br />
3. To appreciate <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> humanity and understand how cultural factors impact consumers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> criminal justice system.<br />
4. To streng<strong>the</strong>n critical thinking skills by fostering an understanding <strong>of</strong> deviance and clarifying personal values related to working<br />
with deviant populations.<br />
5. To cultivate an understanding <strong>of</strong> qualitative and quantitative methods <strong>of</strong> research and writing applicable to <strong>the</strong> criminal justice field.<br />
School <strong>of</strong> Lifelong Learning. Students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> online baccalaureate programs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s School <strong>of</strong> Lifelong<br />
Learning (SLL) should consult SLL publications and <strong>the</strong>ir academic advisor for <strong>the</strong> availability and rotation <strong>of</strong> courses<br />
available for <strong>the</strong>m in an online format.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH A MAJOR IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE – 36 hours<br />

*With permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department Chair, CRJS 439 and CRJS 490 may be taken twice.<br />
NOTE: Courses used as part <strong>of</strong> a concentration area (below) cannot be used as an elective in <strong>the</strong> 36-hour Core. Students may<br />
want to choose electives at <strong>the</strong> 300 or 400 level to ensure <strong>the</strong>y take <strong>the</strong> 36 upper-level credit hours required for graduation.<br />
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH A CONCENTRATION IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE – 54 hours<br />
NOTE: Students completing a concentration in Criminal Justice do not need to complete a minor in order to graduate.<br />
