Main achievements of the project
Theme 1: Turbo and turbo-like codes
Through the Marie Curie MACC (Multi-application
Advanced Channel Coding) project and the PHC
Galilée "Development of advanced techniques for
coding and modulation of future wireless
networks" project, construction and theoretical
analysis of new classes of hybrid turbo codes, i.e.,
combining the principles of parallel and series
concatenation. In practical terms, what is of
interest are codes whose decoding does not
include flattening, the minimal Hamming distance
being the parameter to maximize. These studies
led to five articles in international journals, one of
which [1] has been published, with the other four
to appear in 2009.
Theme 2 : Coding and modulation
One technique of coded modulation based on
constellation diversity and developed in a thesis
[2] and in the B21C (Broadcast for the 21st
Century) project was proposed at the DVB 1 forum
and adopted into the DVB-T2 (second-generation
digital terrestrial TV) digital diffusion standard.
This technique also led to a patent filing and the
software protected.
Theme 4 : Algorithm/hardware
architecture interaction
Certification of the SME42 (Small and Medium
Enterprises for T2) by the Eurostar cluster of the
European program Eureka. This project was
proposed in collaboration with the small and midsized
businesses TeamCast, from Rennes, and
SIDSA, from Madrid. It was ranked first in the
classification that led to the certification of 114
projects. Its goal is the joint development of a
DVB-T2 transmitter and receiver.
AMPIST (Advanced Modem Prototype for
Interactive Satellite Terminals) project, in
collaboration with the ESA 2 and the company STM:
comparison of complexity and performance of
iterative receivers for interference cancellation
between adjacent carriers for satellite
transmissions.
Honors: Claude Berrou rose to the rank of IEEE
Fellow for "invention of turbo codes,
generalization of the turbo principle in receivers,
and influence in standardization" in the area of
coding, in November 2008.

Bretagne and the INRETS (the French National Institute
for Transport and Safety Research).
