In my mind then comes a phrase
I'd written once in a story— In
China white is the colour of death.
I stand over a bouquet of white
chrysanthemums— remembering
learning to spell and say the
word with as many letters as
petals—
the chrysanthemum— is also a
flower of death— and so I bend
and twist a stem which breaks
unwillingly—
—and place it beside the roses on
the coffin.
