In all of India, the place
most sacred is the confluence of
three rivers, goddess rivers.
The two above flow east,
the third, Saraswati, underground
and invisible, flows west.
Saraswati invented flowing
words, the speech of rivers,
syllables etched on hennaed hands.
Here bodies are burned and float
down river in their catafalques.
People dream of dying here,
of floating into the realm
that follows life.
