“Mom’s” the word!!
Since Mother’s Day is upon us, dedicating this
month’s article to “Moms” seemed fitting.
“When you are a mother………………..you are
never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always
has to think twice, once for herself and once
for her child.” -- Sophia Loren
There are so many things, unbeknownst to me
and my Mom that we learned from each other. For
me, not only did I learn so much by her model and
presence, but I also acquired personality traits that
had little choice but to land squarely on my shoulders.
I say that fondly of course because, aside from
potential future medical monitoring, for the most
part these traits are a good thing. I am sure many
of you can relate to having said something to your
child or laughed in a certain way and you think;
“oh my, I just sounded so much like my mother”
or “that is something that would have come out of
Mom’s mouth!” When I was younger I might have
been annoyed resembling a family member in any
way as I struggled for my own autonomy in a large
family. As I have aged and matured, I take comfort
in the fact that many traits that were a part of my
Does your weight stay the
same even though you exercise
and eat well Is your
weight more than you think it
should be based on your lifestyle
If you have ‘stuck weight’ your hormones may be
to blame. When there is an imbalance, your weight
may be very difficult to shed, or can increase! Our
bodies are more complicated than calories in equal
calories out.
Any of the following can indicate an imbalance:
diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic stress, trouble
sleeping, fatigue (especially in the afternoon),
weight around the abdomen, heavy or irregular periods,
menopause, PMS, low libido, etc...
There are a variety of hormones that impact
both weight loss and weight gain. Any of them
can become too high or too low. Insulin, cortisol,
estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and thyroid
hormones are commonly of concern.
Exercise, eating well, and drinking lots of water
are still essential for weight loss. These factors help
contribute to healthy hormones, but sometimes
more support is needed. When the body is given
Mom, carry on in myself and my siblings, and on
down to our children as well. It makes me realize
that even though she left us in body, her spirit
and strength lives on in her offspring. Although I
often feel cheated that I didn’t have my Mom long
enough, I have to remind myself that I was fortunate
to have her well into my adulthood.
The greatest thing she’d learned over the years
is that there’s no way to be a perfect mother, but a
million ways to be a good one.-- Author Unknown
Moms, Grandmothers, Aunts and the like, play
a very important role in the lives of children both
young and old. Please take the time this Mother’s
Day to honour these women by acknowledging
the trust, faith admiration and appreciation you
have for them. The gift of time, a handwritten note
what it needs, the weight should take care of itself.
Based on your symptoms, a physical exam and
some lab work, we can sort out which hormones
need support. An individualized treatment plan, including
herbs, nutrition supplements, specific lifestyle
changes and/or acupuncture can bring back
balance in your life.
It is possible to feel your best, and lose weight.
In addition, when you’re body is hormonally balanced,
you reduce the risk of all chronic disease –
cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes.
or a small token is a sentimental treasure that a
Mom carries close to her heart along with the love
for her child.
“A mother is the truest friend we have, when
trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity
takes the place of prosperity; when friends
who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when
trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us,
and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to
dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to
return to our hearts.” -- Washington Irving
Lights! Curtain! Action!
Drama students at Avonview High School in in
Windsor have started rehearsals for a Dinner Theatre
play they will be performing in June. The storyline
deals with impaired driving and the group
is partnering with MADD Annapolis Valley to bring
their talent to the stage.
Drama teacher, Jennifer DesLauriers, has written
a script for the students with a familiar setting for
many. The parents of a teenager are going out for
the evening and give permission for a few friends
to come over for company. The few become a few
more and alcohol comes onto the scene. One guest
leaves and shortly thereafter we hear sirens. So ends
the second act but they are leaving the third for
those who attend the play.
In true dinner theatre style, the actors will be
serving the audience between acts while staying in
character. This always inspires interesting dialogue
with the waiters as guests try to offer advice on a
character’s dilemma or a particularly cheeky character
has fun playing their part.
We would like to congratulate Jennifer and
her students on their initiative. It is an interesting
way for participants and audience members alike
to learn a little more about the responsibility that
comes with drinking and the same with driving and
why the two should never be mixed.
We will be posting updates of their progress on
our website at http://madd.ca/annapolisvalley and
hope you can join us.
