How to Conserve Water
in the Landscape
Since there is a limited amount of fresh
drinking water in the world, it is very important
to look for ways to monitor the amount
used in the landscape. There are a few things
that can be done to help decrease the amount
water used.
By adding a layer of mulch to your garden,
you keep water in the soil making it available
to the plant, rather than having it evaporate
into the air. As the mulch breaks down, it will
provide nutrients to the soil, which in turn will
reduce the need for additional fertilizers.
Xeriscaping is an approach to landscaping
that minimizes outdoor water use while maintaining
soil integrity through the use of native
and drought-tolerant plants.
Collecting rain water and using it to water
your garden on hot summer days is a great
way to save on the use of fresh drinking water.
In coming months you’ll be reading about generators
and information you may find helpful in choosing
and servicing your emergency power source.
Consider: ‘What appliances do I need to operate during a power outage’ And how much power is
required to both ‘start’ and then ‘run’ these units
Below is one situation and how to work out the generator size required. There are typically 2 kinds of
loads in a residence. Motor loads and resistive loads. When you have appliances with motors, you need to
use the starting watts when doing your calculations. Motors draw more current at startup than when they
are running.
Appliance Load Running Watts Starting Watts
Water Pump (½ HP ) 500 1500
Fridge 500 1500
Freezer 750 2300
Microwave 1000
Coffee Maker 1000
Kitchen Lights 120
Computer 800
Running watts (excluding load with biggest starting watts) = 3920W
+ Starting watts of load with biggest starting watts = 2300W
Sub-Total 6220W
10% is added for safety + 622W
Grand Total 6842W
In this example a 7KW Generator will do the job.
Nominal voltages taken from manufacturers specifications have been used to calculate this estimate.
A more accurate calculation can be done using the nameplate information found on the various appliances.
The Perfect Storm… ‘Anytime you are properly prepared in advance for a power outage with the right
generator.’
