Ah Spring!
Dave Reid
D.M. Reid Jewellers Ltd
Ah Spring! The weather gets warmer (usually),
plants show signs of growth, and many
thoughts turn to love, romance…..and diamonds!
Knowing what makes a diamond more or
less valuable is critical to making such an important
decision and this is where the 4 C’s of
diamond quality come in- cut, colour, clarity
and carat weight.
Cut is not only the shape of the diamond,
but it’s ‘make’ or how well proportioned it is.
Better proportions allow for more light to be
captured and dispersed back to the eye as brilliance,
scintillation, fire and overall beauty.
Colour refers to the tint or lack thereof that
every diamond exhibits. The whiter the diamond
the more rare and valuable the stone
is; more tint or body colour the less desirable
the diamond.
Clarity is how free of natural inclusions or
‘birthmarks’ a diamond has and a truly ‘flawless’
diamond is very rare. There are several
good grades of diamonds that have minimal
inclusions and appear very ‘clean’.
Finally, carat is the weight of the diamond.
A carat can be divided into 100 ‘points’, similar
to dollars and cents, so a fifty point stone is
0.50 carat or ½ carat.
When shopping for a diamond, make sure
you know your 4 C’s, ask questions about each
stone, have the seller show you the diamond
under magnification and point out the characteristics
of each stone, as every diamond is
unique.
Next issue we’ll talk more about diamonds
and what to look for when you’re shopping.
