Spring Checklist for your Pet
Finally, the spring season is upon us – warmer
weather and sunshine are here. Just as you’re preparing
to freshen up your home with spring cleaning
(it’s a tradition, after all), it’s also the perfect
time to work on your “Springtime Pet Checklist.”
1. Flee the Flea. The warmer weather is your cue
to begin administering flea & tick preventatives.
Whether you use popular flea and tick treatments
or combat fleas without chemicals, make sure your
pets are protected. Also, after playing outdoors or
hiking with your dog, check his or her entire body
for ticks.
2. Say No to Heartworm. The warmer weather
is also the time to begin administering heartworm
preventatives . Schedule a vet exam to ensure that
your pet is heartworm-free.
3. Safety First. Create a Pet First Aid kit. Our
friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you find
everything you’ll need to put a kit together. Check
with your vet to make sure your dog’s rabies vaccination
is up to date.
4. Planting Prep. Spring flowers and blooming
gardens are beautiful, but could also be hazardous
to your pets.
5. Primp Your Pup. Help your dog feel refreshed
with a thorough spring cleaning. Schedule a trip
to the groomer for a wash and trim, purge your
old shampoo and cleaning supplies and set up your
own doggie spa. Try a new dog shampoo and conditioner,
like our line from Tropiclean, or one of the
new models of de-shedding tools from Furminator
to help thin your dog’s or Cat’s winter coat.
6. De-Grime Your Dog’s Gear. Wash and freshen
your dog’s bedding, clean your dog’s toys and discard
them as needed. Clean, wash and disinfect or
replace your dog’s bowls, placemats, and grooming
supplies too. Also check the dates on all pet
food and treats, discarding those past the ‘use by’
dates.
7. Spring Fashion, Dog-Style. Freshen up your
dog’s wardrobe with a colourful new spring collar
and lead, speaking of collars, update any outdated
or hard- to- read information on your dog’s ID tags
as needed.
8. Plan a Getaway. Make your plans now for a
spring or early summer weekend getaway – with
your pet as your travel buddy, of course. With more
and more hotels, motels and B & B’s accepting pets
of all sizes, the options are endless.
9. Find Some Fun. Get into shape with your dog
by spending more time exercising outdoors and
making a plan to participate in fun new activities .
