Core aeration is the mechanical removal of small cores of soil from your lawn using an aerator machine. This might be the most important thing you do to your lawn to create a healthy thick lawn. As your lawn grows it accumulates a thick layer of “thatch” on the surface of the soil. Thatch consist of a tight network of roots, etc that look like a thick fiberous mat. This thatch acts as a barrier, blocking the movement of air, water and fertilizer into the root zone. By aerating your lawn annually the thatch layer is broken up and the soil cores that are pulled out break apart on the lawn surface mixing with thatch changing it into something closer to soil than thatch. Native to Europe, North Africa and Asia, the Daffodil is part of the Amaryllis family with over 100 known species. In the Southern U.S., smaller more delicate forms of the Narcissus are known as jonquil, but, what ever the variation, we call them Daffodils. The flower was named after the Greek myth of Narcissus, a young immortal fellow who was granted his good looks from the Gods. The only condition was that he was not to gaze at himself and make of his good looks. One day while hunting in the forest, a nymph named Echo fell desperately in love with Narcissus, but was spurned by him. So in love, she wept and pined over him until all that was left was her voice. The goddess Nemesis heard of Echo’s plight and lured Narcissus to a crystal clear lake where in vain, he gazed upon himself and vanished. In his place grew a golden flower, which bears his name. Never the less, it’s time to keep your eyes open as there is nothing vain to be able to gaze upon the clusters of sunny blossoms that, at any time, will adorn our spring gardens. Here are some tips to help you prepare for heavy rain as well as potential flooding: • Check perimeter drains around your property and make sure they are clear of ice and debris. • Drive carefully. Never try to drive through floodwater. If a car stalls in floodwater, get out quickly and move to higher ground. • If you are planning to travel, follow current highway conditions and any road closures signs. • Organize your individual and family emergency kit. It should contain important documents, prescription medication, a flashlight and first aid kit. • Watch for changing conditions, particularly if you live in low-lying areas or near waterways. • Ensure you have a battery-powered radio in working order, with spare batteries, to listen to instructions from local emergency officials. • Avoid small creeks and rivers. Their channels tend to be narrow and can fill up quickly. Also, eroded banks result in unstable ground. Most importantly, keep children and pets away from stream banks. • To report severe flooding in your area, contact your local municipal government.
