“In Lieu of Flowers”
- Can I Still Send Flowers
APPLE VALLEY SCOOP MAY 2012 • Listen to Scoop Radio on www.applevalleyscoop.com 13
Dr. Nancy Etcoff, looked at the role of flowers
in the grief process. The study surveyed
grief therapists, funeral directors, people who
had lost a loved one and the general public.
Findings from the survey of bereaved peopled
found that:
The death of a family member or close friend
is one life’s most difficult times. People often
find it difficult to express their condolences in
words, and want to send flowers to the bereaved
as a symbol of remembrance and to
provide comfort. One of the most common
questions asked of us is “Can I still send flowers
even if the obituary says donations may be
made in lieu of flowers” The answer is yes.
A Harvard University study conducted by
“Aren’t All Driving Schools The Same”
• 82% agreed that sending flowers is a
way to show someone you care
• 69% agreed that “flowers at the funeral
give me a warm feeling”
• 54% said that receiving sympathy
flowers helped a great deal with their
grief
Eighty percent of grief therapists believe
receiving flowers aids in the grieving process
and the majority of funeral directors said they
did not like doing funerals without flowers because
the setting was so cold without them.
Seventy seven percent of people surveyed in
the public survey felt that flowers at the funeral
home brighten the space and provide
something to talk about during the visitation.
It is important that each giver make their
own choice about sending flowers. Many
people are choosing to send a floral remembrance
to the service or family home as well
as a donation to the charity indicated. “In lieu
of flowers” doesn’t mean not to send flowers.
It means that donations are another option,
and you can certainly do both. Most families
appreciate all personal expressions of support.
Carrying on the fine tradition of Pulsifer’s Flowers since 1932
By Greg Robar, Young Drivers of Canada
The answer, plain and simple, is no. While driving
schools are required under the Motor Vehicle
Act to cover specific topics for both the class and
in-car portions of their program, how these are
delivered and to what degree vary significantly
by driving school.
The Young Drivers Program has been designed
to be just that, a program. The components are
pieces of a puzzle that fit together and support
each other, giving the new driver a clear picture
of their driving environment and the knowledge
to perceive and minimize risks or handle any surprises.
The Act requires 25 hours of classroom training
and 10 hours of in-car instruction. The student
must attend all classes or make up missed
sessions in another class. The in-car sessions
must also be completed. With the YD program,
each of these sessions has a lesson plan teaching
different skills. This is all instruction time, not just
driving around.
The Young Drivers program also includes
online Cognitive training for skills associated
with the driving task that also help with school,
sports, music, and general awareness of the
world around us.
The training involved for instructors also goes
above and beyond government regulations.
There are tests to determine whether or not an
applicant is suited to the position, they have four
weeks of training for in car work alone and another
two for classroom teaching, as opposed to
the 2 weeks training required for government
standards to cover both. YD instructors are also
re-certified annually.
It is also important to note that driving schools
are no longer part of the education system but
are private companies. Some schools do hold
classes at high schools but they have no connection
to the Department of Education.
Thanks to all who have asked about the differences!
