Keeping your dog properly groomed is an important part of the responsibility of dog ownership. Just like people, Dogs need regular grooming to remain healthy while looking their best. Their needs will vary according to breed, hair type, activity, etc but they should be on a schedule. Check with your vet if your dog has any skin, ear or nail issues for approved methods. Some general rules of thumb are as follows: Brush your pet often; Long haired dogs usually require daily attention to prevent matting and tangles. Medium haired dogs are prone to matting and should be brushed weekly. Shorthaired dogs can be done monthly to keep them in the best shape. More frequent brushing during shedding season can help prevent hair build up. Nail trimming is an important step in health maintenance and many dog owners struggle with it. If it is done incorrectly the dogs will resist the activity, so if you are unsure of technique, ask your vet tech or groomer to help with this tricky task. Nails should be trimmed monthly but some dogs may need more frequent attention. Bath time can be traumatic for both dogs and their owners but dogs should be bathed regularly starting at a young age so they learn not to be afraid. Be sure to use a shampoo that is intended for dogs. Learning how to properly bathe your dog can make the experience a positive one for all. Ears, teeth and feet should be checked, and cleaned often. Start touching these areas as much as possible with young puppies so they learn to be comfortable with people handling them. This makes it easier for you, your vet, your groomer and your dog.
