Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two most common types of arthritic conditions. The Arthritis Foundation estimates that almost every person over the age of 60 years probably has OA to some degree, but fewer than half have it severe enough to notice any symptoms. Symptoms of OA include: • - stiffness on awakening or after prolonged rest • - pain in a joint during or after use • - discomfort in a joint before or during a change in weather • - swelling and a loss of flexibility in a joint • - bony lumps (nodules) that develop on the end or middle joint of the fingers The presence of pain and stiffness in either one or a few joints is key to diagnosing osteoarthritis (OA). Unfortunately, there’s no cure for most forms of arthritis. The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms of pain and inflammation with the help of exercise programs, physiotherapy, and medications. Feelings of worthlessness and self-blame, sadness and disappointment or emptiness are normal and usually temporary. When theses feelings or emotions become severe and start interfering with one’s work and social life, it’s possible that depression has become an illness otherwise know as clinical depression. It is unknown what the cause is of clinical depression is or how long it may last. Each case is individual and unique for each person. Without professional treatment it may end on its own after several weeks or months. With treatment, it may end more quickly. Depression is the most treatable of mental illnesses. Most people who suffer from depression and are treated with medication and or counseling find that they are dramatically helped buy the therapy. It may be very difficult to be with and help someone whom is depressed. Try to be patient and non-judgmental. Listen and offer support rather than try to contradict them. Most of all don’t do it alone. A great support group of family, friends and health care professionals will help encourage, guide and answer questions to improve the overall outcome. If you or someone you know needs help contact a community organization, such as the Canadian mental Health Association, which can help find additional support.
