Celebrating Mother’s Day has changed<br />
since the it was officially proclaimed to be the<br />
second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In the<br />
beginning, carnations were given, but now<br />
cards, flowers and gifts are given to mothers<br />
as a symbol of thanks. Mother’s Day is about<br />
expressing your kind thanks for all that your<br />
mother has done for you as well as all you’ve<br />
been through together; this can be expressed<br />
over brunch, through a thoughtfully selected<br />
piece of jewelery, flowers or a card. Of course<br />
today, many children move away from home<br />
to go to school or work, and you can’t always<br />
be together. Today it is still possible to say<br />
happy Mother’s Day beyond a phone call<br />
-- options such as Skype, Facetime, ecards,<br />
and telefloral services allow you to be just a<br />
little closer to home. Having lost my mother<br />
when I was only four, I never really celebrated<br />
Mother’s Day. It was often a sad day, but I<br />
did appreciate everyone who was there for me<br />
and supported me. Now that I have my own<br />
two boys, I love Mother’s Day. For me I await<br />
to see what they have planned. Some years<br />
it was breakfast in bed, other years it was a<br />
flower for my garden, and other times, it was<br />
jewelry which usually had the word ‘mom’ in<br />
it that I wear very proudly, and other times it<br />
was going out for brunch or supper. But, no<br />
matter what they did or gave me, the most<br />
important part of our special day was them<br />
spending time with me especially when they<br />
were helping me plant the flower they gave<br />
me in the garden or just enjoying the day together.<br />
So for me, Mother’s Day is spending<br />
time together.<br />
