Avoiding Invisible
Home Hazards
Most of us don’t give a second thought to
the way we organize our homes. Fashion over
function has become the mantra of modern
interior design and few of us are willing to
compromise when it comes to making our
homes look, feel and be exactly as we want
them to be.
Yet for the elderly, every tiny aspect of the
home is a major consideration and potential
hazard. Whether it’s the bathroom, kitchen,
stairs, garage or basement, there are countless
risks of injury within the home.
As we age, our five senses weaken or
heighten in different ways, making us more
prone to accidents from seemingly innocuous
tasks. For example, our sense of smell tends
to become less acute, reducing our ability to
detect spoiled food, burning toast or leaking
gas. Similarly our hearing worsens, limiting
our ability to hear telephones, doorbells and
smoke alarms.
Light up your life: Be sure you have a light
switch or lamp easily accessible in all rooms
and hallways to avoid having to walk in the
dark.
Clear the way: Keep the path between your
bed and the bathroom door clear of obstructions
to prevent trips and other injuries
Give yourself a leg up: Keep a step stool
in the kitchen to ensure you can easily reach
items on upper shelves and to help prevent
slips and falls
Take a seat: Keep chairs or benches at entranceways
to make putting on footwear easier
and reduce the chance of a dangerous fall
