Patrick
(Packey)
McFarland
pulls no punches
on this elite
1910 E78 Prize
Fighters specimen.
An ideal
“Type” card for the boxing historian, this century-old
relic meets the elevated standards for the technical
assessment with well-constructed corners, snow white
edges and accurate centering. The pugilist emerges
from the forest green backdrop that has been unaffected
by the decades. The checklist reverse is clean. The next
highest graded McFarland specimen is only judged
great Stanley
Ketchel,
murdered at
only 24
years of age,
is portrayed
months prior
to his
untimely
demise on
this challenging 1910 E78 sample. Absent of any promotional
branding, this exceedingly scarce representation
is bolstered by strong corners, creamy edges and a
radiant obverse. Despite a moderate diamond cut, the
overwhelming image of The Champ is not adversely
affected in the least. The checklist reverse is clean. The
sole Ketchel at the grading level with only one better.
SGC.
Regarded as
one of the
best poundfor-pound
boxers in
history, Joe
Gans adeptly
applies
his craft on
the 1910
E78 Prize Fighters specimen. According to the SGC
population report, this razor-sharp tactician is the only
representative at the grading level with only one better.
With so few examples of any card from this designation
on the secondary market, this pioneering pugilist should
garner plenty of interest.
Opening Bid $200.00
814. 1910 E78 Prize Fighters Owen
Moran SGC 70
Graded 70 EX+ 5.5 by SGC. This delicate 1910 E78
Prize Fighter Owen Moran is “just the type” for the
advanced boxing card collector. The English
Bantamweight meets the criteria for the technical grade
with relatively strong corners, clean edges and lush
obverse hues. The checklist reverse is problem-free.
The only example judged at the grading level with only
two better.
Highest Graded and None Better! Graded 55 VG-
EX+ 4.5 by SGC. Sparring partners Sammy Berger and
Jim Jeffries square off on this 1910 E78 Prize Fighters
cornerstone. Perhaps the most desirable card in the designation,
this horizontal rendering of the Heavyweight
Champion and his associate are accentuated by an
alluring red-white-and-blue background color scheme.
The well defined corners frame the illustration which
displays only modest chipping beneath the fighters’
identities. One of only a handful known to have been
made available for public sale.
is found with this
1910 E78 Prize
Fighter Battling Nelson example. Graded 45 VG+ 3.5
by SGC, the pugilist is crowned with a 1910 E8
American Caramel Battleships back. Despite askew
top-to-bottom centering, this relic otherwise exhibits
strong corners, crisp edges and a vibrant surface color
scheme. With deference to the upside down back, this
remains the lone Nelson at the grading level with only
two better.
