ITEM WITH RESERVE
398. George Wright Autographed 1896 Dinner Invitation
- PSA/DNA 10 With Full JSA
The first-ever batter
in National
League history,
Baseball Hall of
Famer George
Wright was
instrumental in
the development
of several other
sports, as well. At
the age of only
49, Wright had
not only longsince
completed a 12-year Major League Baseball career, but celebrated the 25th
anniversary of the innovative “Wright & Ditson” sporting equipment business that
helped spur the popularity of baseball, golf and tennis. Encapsulated with autograph
Graded GEM MT 10 by PSA/DNA, this George Wright signature is among the
most difficult to acquire in the realm of 1800s Hall of Famers and, as indicated by
PSA/DNA’s assessment, the boldest you’ll ever behold. The black-ink scripting, incidentally,
is on an 1896 Wright & Ditson 25th anniversary dinner invitation. Full
photo LOA from JSA. This item has a reserve (estimated value $4500-$7500).
Opening Bid $1500.00
401. 1937 Leo
Durocher Trade
Contract Signed by
Grimes and Rickey -
Full JSA
Historical baseball content, pivotal
figures and infamous personalities
abound on this original
document. Simply put, the
elements and endorsements
combine to evoke countless
memories of individuals and teams from transitional phases that shaped the National
Pastime. Drawn up on August 1, 1937, the two-page original draft details a blockbuster
transaction between the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. At the conclusion, the
contract is endorsed in an executive capacity by both Dodgers manager Burleigh Grimes
and Cardinals business manager Branch Rickey. Along the way, principals of the trade
are documented. In summary, the deal calls for the Cardinals to assign the contract of Leo
Durocher to the Dodgers. In exchange, the Dodgers are to assign St. Louis the contracts
of Jim Bucher, Johnny Cooney, Roy Henshaw and Tony Malinosky. Flanking the typewritten
text, Rickey (“BR”) has initialed the left side and Grimes (“B.A.G.”) has initialed
the right side. At the conclusion (on page 2), both have executed black-ink steel tip fountain
pen scriptings that project (“9”) strength and clarity. Both sheets have very minor
edge tears and are otherwise complete, forming a binding document involving key figures
in baseball annals. Full photo LOA from JSA.
