Baseball Currency
Vouchers -
Wolverines and
White Stockings
During the most archaic stages
of both baseball and retail
advertising, these (2) 1887
coupon vouchers simultaneously
promoted a Michigan
store and National League
franchises. Printed like paper
currency, each is redeemable
for 25 cents off a purchase of
$5.00 at “Three C’s” (Central
City Clothiers). Both have woodcut composites of the team owner or manager on the
front, with (12) player likenesses on the reverse. Includes Detroit Wolverines (torn in
two, middle portion missing) and Chicago White Stockings with Spalding and Anson.
White Stockings
(Cubs) Jewelry Store
Currency with Anson
and Spalding
As baseball popularity continued
to grow during the 1880s enterprising
merchants cashed in on
this phenomenon by issuing store
“Currency” coupons featuring
various Major League teams.
Presented is an absolutely gorgeous
1889 example of this currency
type bearing images of the
“Chicago White Stockings” (Cubs). Measuring 7-3/4 x 3-1/2” this stunning note is
graced by a portrait of team owner Albert Spalding and an unidentified period batsman
on the obverse and a composite woodcut of (12) player portraits on the reverse
including “Cap” Anson. More on our website.
262. Jimmie Foxx 1935 Sterling Silver Achievement Medal
Glancing at Jimmie Foxx’s impressive statistics, one would be inclined to surmise that
he was worth his weight in gold. Thinking along those lines, The American Home presented
the Philadelphia Athletics slugger with this sterling silver medal for his efforts
in 1935. Measuring 1-15/16 x 3-3/16” with rounded corners, the 7.2-oz. sterling silver
prize has engravings which read: “ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL AWARDED BY THE
AMERICAN HOME – JIMMIE FOXX 1935.” On the reverse, an ornate relief design
portrays an outdoor garden. In his final season with the Athletics, Foxx clubbed a
league-best 36 home runs in 1936 to warrant this unique bestowal.
