C o l l e g e
Report Card
With an undying
loyalty to his
home state,
Robert E. Lee
chose to remain
in Virginia
throughout its
secession and
earn acclaim as a
military strategist
for the Confederate Army. With keen foresight that helped win many battles against
larger Union armies, Lee took the natural course to education and served as the
President of Washington College. In that post-war endeavor, Lee signed this student
report card. Dated “November 30, 1866,” the document has handwritten numeric
grades for three subjects. On the appropriate line, Lee’s black-ink steel tip fountain
pen signature projects (“8”) strength and clarity. Examples of this coveted signature
are rare, indeed. Full photo LOA from JSA.
