291. Eddie Plank Type 1
Photo
“Gettysburg Eddie” Plank finessed his way
to the Hall of Fame while becoming the
first left-handed member of the “300 Win”
club. The offered 4x6 “Type 1” photo features
a dynamic sepia-toned image of
Plank in full pitching stride. Handwritten
notation on the photo reverse reads “Plank
who pitched 2nd game for Athletics”. This
note most likely refers to the second game
of either the 1911 or 1913 World Series
both pitched by Plank. This century old
image displays in better grade with nice
original gloss and light peripheral wear
including several pinholes which do not
impact the subject.
Opening Bid $200.00
293. Babe Ruth and
“Benny” Early-1930s Type I
Photograph
Known to befriend thousands (especially
where food and merriment were concerned),
Babe Ruth was true to his style
with the proprietor of New York’s
Benny’s Rainbow Restaurant.
Fraternizing in the eponymously dubbed
“House That Ruth Built” during the early-
1930s, the two were captured in this gorgeous
Type I photograph. The double
weight stock item has been trimmed to
approximately 6-1/2 x 9” and depicts a
firm handshake with Ruth in his Yankee
attire and Benny clad in suit, necktie and
fedora. Well kept, this one is crease free
with a blank reverse.
Opening Bid $200.00
297. 1965 World
Series Game 7 Type I
Original News
Service Photo -
PSA/DNA
Smiles, handshakes and
embraces had become a familiar
scene when Sandy Koufax took
the hill. Game 7 of the 1965
Fall Classic was no exception as
the dominant southpaw three-hit
the host Twins on only two
days’ rest. The celebration scene was captured on this Type I original news service
photo. The 10x8 black-and-white photo shows Koufax surrounded by (13) of his
Dodger mates (with skipper Walt Alton first in line). Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, the
crease-free item has editorial notations and a post-1958 “United Press International
Photo” stamping on the reverse.
Opening Bid $150.00
292. Lou Gehrig and
“Benny” Early-1930s Type
I Photograph
Manhattan’s “in” spot during the
“Murderers Row” era and for decades
after, Benny’s Rainbow Restaurant was
frequented by sports celebrities from
Ruth to Gehrig to Marciano (and thousands
in between). Returning the favor
during the early-1930s, Benny paid
Gehrig a visit in the Bronx, where the
two were hand-shaking subjects of this
vintage photograph. Measuring 7-15/16
x 9-7/8”, the double weight stock sepiatoned
photo is a Type I relic with a
blank reverse. With only minor corner
creases and right edge fissures, the piece
presents nicely and is ideal for display.
Opening Bid $200.00
294. Joe DiMaggio
men through the summer
of 1941. Encapsulated by
PSA/DNA, this Type I original
news service photograph
provides telling evidence of the fan fervor surrounding the incredible feat. Measuring
9 x 8-1/8”, the black-and-white photo depicts DiMaggio batting at Yankee Stadium.
On the reverse, an “ACME NEWSPICTURES” stamping is accompanied by a caption
sheet and “7-3-’41” stamping. More on our website.
Opening Bid $150.00
