Research Definitions<br />

A <strong>Jewish</strong> adult is defined as someone who:<br />

Is 18 years <strong>of</strong> age or older, and<br />

Resides in <strong>the</strong> greater <strong>East</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>, and<br />

Self-identifies as <strong>Jewish</strong> when asked <strong>the</strong>ir religion, or<br />

Indicates <strong>the</strong>y consider <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>Jewish</strong> in some way, or<br />

Was born or raised <strong>Jewish</strong>.<br />

A <strong>Jewish</strong> child is one raised by a <strong>Jewish</strong> adult or a child that an adult in <strong>the</strong> household<br />

considers to be <strong>Jewish</strong>.<br />

A <strong>Jewish</strong> household is any household in which one or more adults in <strong>the</strong> household consider<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to be <strong>Jewish</strong> in accordance with <strong>the</strong> criteria above, or where a non-<strong>Jewish</strong> adult in<br />

<strong>the</strong> household indicates that <strong>the</strong>re is at least one <strong>Jewish</strong> person living in <strong>the</strong> household. Note<br />

that <strong>the</strong> one <strong>Jewish</strong> person could be a child.<br />

The geographic focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey, <strong>the</strong> Greater <strong>East</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>, included four counties: Alameda,<br />

Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano counties. Throughout <strong>the</strong> research and analysis, we used two<br />

different geographic definitions for <strong>the</strong> Greater <strong>East</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>. The regions were used to identify<br />

smaller sub-regions, and both iterations were defined by zip code.<br />

The first definition was used for <strong>the</strong> original (pre-survey) incidence estimates, sample<br />

design, dialing, and weighting:<br />
