Volunteerism peaks among those who are providing <strong>the</strong>ir children with a <strong>Jewish</strong> education: 36<br />
percent report volunteering weekly or monthly, perhaps reflecting <strong>the</strong> service component that<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten accompanies a formalized <strong>Jewish</strong> education. Volunteers are a bit younger than nonvolunteers<br />
and <strong>the</strong>y are also higher income.<br />
Regular volunteers are more likely to be synagogue and organizational members. Forty percent<br />
are current, dues paying members <strong>of</strong> a synagogue, and 39 percent belong to o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Jewish</strong><br />
organizations. Volunteerism, in part, is channeled through <strong>East</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> organizations ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />
occurring spontaneously or independently.<br />
