HONDA and Keiko Hisamatsu were perfect<br />

companions in old age. When he went walking with<br />

Keiko, everyone took <strong>the</strong>m for an affluent, wellmatched<br />

husband and wife. <strong>The</strong>y could see each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r every o<strong>the</strong>r day or so and not be bored. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

worried about each o<strong>the</strong>r’s cholesterol count and<br />

hemorrhoids and possible malignancies, and caused<br />

doctors much amusement. <strong>The</strong>y changed hospitals<br />

with great frequency, suspicious <strong>of</strong> all doctors. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

even had an understanding on trivial economies. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

were assiduous students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> psychology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own aside.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y had even struck a balance in irritability. <strong>The</strong><br />

one would take on a discreet objectivity when <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r was a victim <strong>of</strong> meaningless irritation, and each<br />

fed <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r’s pride. <strong>The</strong>y nursed each o<strong>the</strong>r’s lapses<br />

in memory. When ei<strong>the</strong>r would forget what he had just<br />

said or say quite <strong>the</strong> opposite, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r (why it could<br />

as easily have happened to him) would politely refrain<br />

from laughing.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were both a little vague on things that had<br />

happened <strong>the</strong>se last ten or twenty years; but in
