The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 • VIPs interacting with WISE Program students include Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikha Al-Yaziya bint Saif Al Nahyan, H. E. Christian Wulff (Past- President of Germany) and Lady Barbara Judge (British Business Ambassador). • President of Dar Al Hekma College (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) visits to explore possible collaborations. II. Program Mission and Goals The Petroleum Institute’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program seeks to promote women’s education attainment, professional aspirations, social responsibility and personal growth. The Program aspires to develop successful female engineers and scientists who make meaningful contributions to the profession and to society at large. The Program’s goals are to: • inspire lifelong learning, • foster leadership skills, • encourage civic involvement, and • promote engagement in applied sciences and engineering. - Laboratory Technician (joint appointment with Mechanical Engineering Department) Changes: • The position of “Director of WISE Program” has been renamed “Dean of WISE Program.” • To streamline operations, Arzanah has cut eight positions reporting to centralized units. A receptionist, messenger, maintenance technician, and five security personnel have been replaced with one clerical assistant and four attendants reporting to the WISE Program Office. • New interior spaces have been added, including a senior student lounge, an alumnae office, a ‘mummies’ room’, and Gallery Turath. Outside, we now have Falcon Field, with some outdoor dining furniture and, not least, the auditorium has been refurbished and renamed the ADMA Auditorium @ PI. III. Highlights of Academic Year 2011-2012 New Employees: • Ms. Randa Abu Sharia – Activities Coordinator • Ms. Ghaidaa Farousi – Sports Coach (appointment with Student Affairs Division) • Ms. Swagie Rosma Binsali – Clerical Assistant • Ms. Michelle Bautista - Attendant • Ms. Jennifer (Hagar) Barrun - Attendant • Ms. Ma Lyn Bianes - Attendant • Ms. Annie Eassy – Attendant • Mr. Sundharamoorthy Venugopal Collaborative Endeavors: A delegation from Dar Al Hekma College (DAH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, paid a visit on April 24th, 2012 to establish contact and discuss the feasibility of a MOU. 114
A year of transformation, growth and success Activities Focused on Student Retention: Since the establishment of the WISE Program, the undergraduate female student population has increased from 11% in Fall 2006 to 36% in Fall 2011 (Table I) of the total student enrollment. Female Nationals stand at 74% of the total undergraduate female population. In addition to our established annual events, new activities such as ‘Honor the Falcon Day’ and International Women’s Day were introduced, three new student clubs were established and cultural and social events organized. In the past year, more guests were invited to Arzanah and our Arzanah Ambassadors (student volunteers and representatives) have met Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikha Al-Yaziya bint Saif Al Nahyan, H. E. Christian Wulff (past President of Germany), Lady Barbara Judge (British Business Ambassador), H. E. Mr. Abdulla Al Suwaidi (Director General of ADNOC), as well as several CEOs from ADNOC’s operating companies. Our students also impressed visitors from the PI’s Institutional Advisory Board, the ABET Team and visitors from Stevens Institute of Technology.
