The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 IV. Current Initiatives Student Retention Initiatives Arts and Sciences provides a number of services intended to enhance student retention, from delivering more studentcentered, active-learning courses to providing academic support services through the Chemistry Learning Center (CLC), Physics Tutorial Program (PTP), Mathematics Learning Support Center (MSLC) and the Writing Center. In addition, this year A&S initiated the Academic Intervention and Mentorship (AIM) program to provide additional advising and mentorship to academically at-risk students. Service and Outreach Arts and Sciences faculty have been involved in a number of service and outreach activities during the Academic Year 2011-12. The major activities are: •• Year 12 and 13 Chemistry students from the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) visited the PI Organic Chemistry labs and shadowed PI students •• German-Emirati Cultural Evening •• A&S sponsored student photo competition •• A&S Events Committee talks o Dr. Margit Muller, Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital o Dr. Mark Hayman, PI o Mr. Wasfi Abu Ghazaleh, Chief Operating Officer at the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee o Dr. John Barry, Vice President of Technical and Production, MENA, Shell Country Chair for UAE o Dr. Mashhad Al-Allaf, PI Awards Arts and Sciences students, faculty, and staff achieved the following honors: •• Student teams from the PI STEPS courses were awarded first and second place in the 4th International Design Competition •• Dr. Paul Rostron, Chemistry - NACE International Technical Achievement Award •• Dr. Ian McNaught, Chemistry – 2011 National Institute of Forensic Science of Australia Best Paper in a Refereed Journal. •• Dr. Issam Kobrsi – 2011-12 PI Junior Faculty Teaching Award •• Mr. Amr Elhameed, 2011-12 PI Laboratory Staff Service Award V. Summary and Future Plans The Arts and Sciences Program plays a key role in preparing engineering students for their engineering studies and their career as a professional engineer. The courses offered develop understanding of fundamental science, mathematics and engineering concepts while also cultivating professional skills such as teamwork, problem solving, leadership, communication, and critical and creative thinking. In addition, A&S courses provide insights into global issues and the impacts of engineering on society in the 21st century. 48
