The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 (ZADCO) and Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company Ltd. (ADGAS) were among the guests. In his keynote speech, Mr. Al Kindy welcomed everyone and encouraged PI alumni to continuously pursue excellence in their work and to communicate regularly with the institute. Dr. Tag also stressed that alumni should keep in touch with the institute after their graduation since this motivates the exchange of experiences with faculty and students. Dr. Isoroku Kubo, who heads the PI Alumni Relations Department and Alumni Committee, also expressed his desire that former PI students keep strong links with their alma mater. 96
A year of transformation, growth and success In the fall of 2011, the association “By- Laws” were drafted by five alumni volunteers and were distributed. After the approval of the “By-Laws”, officers for the association were elected to formally organize the association. b) Alumnae Association Activities: For female graduates, the first Alumnae Iftar was held at ASAB sports complex on August 17, 2011. As this was the first year to see female graduates, organizing the Alumnae association was much smoother than in the case of the Alumni association. The following alumnae were named as officers for the PI Alumnae Association: President: Ms. Nada Abdulkarim Awadhi Spring 2011 - Electrical Engineering Department Vice President: Ms. Thuraya Abdulla Al Hanaei Spring 2011 - Electrical Engineering Communication Coordinator: Ms. Felwa Mohsen Al Ameri Fall 2011 - Petroleum Engineering Activity Coordinator: Ms. Sameya Hamdan Al Ghafri Spring 2011- Electrical Engineering Continuing Education The mission of the Continuing Education Office is to: a. Provide working professionals (especially opco employees) with world class education to upgrade their skills b. Provide PI faculty with opportunities to enhance their technical skills and to interact with industry. With this mission in mind, a new policy and procedures have been established. Some of the new policies include a limitation of the number of days a faculty member can engage in such activities. This policy aims to balance the faculty member’s regular (main) duties such as teaching, research, and service with continuing educational activities. A faculty receives additional payment for educational activities. The rates of pay are also set and will be reviewed periodically. All activities related to continuing education should be approved in advance by the Provost’s office, regardless of who the clients are, as long as he/she engages in the activities during his/her regular duty hours and not during personal vacation time. 97
