The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific
Research approved two new graduate
programs, namely the Master of Engineering
(MEng) in Health, Safety and Environment
(HSE) Engineering and the Master of Science
(MSc) in Applied Chemistry. The first one was
officially launched in Spring 2012 while the
second one kicks-off in Fall 2012.
IV. New Initiatives
On Wednesday 9 May 2012, the 1st Annual
Graduate Research Conference was held
in the newly renovated Arzanah ADMA-
OPCO Auditorium. The conference consisted
of 20 oral and 12 poster presentations by
graduate students and was attended by
senior management, faculty and students. The
primary aims of the conference were:
(a) To give the opportunity to graduate
students to present their work to the PI
community and receive feedback
(b) To give the OPCO’s engineers and
scientists the opportunity to become
familiar with the PI’s research work. Most
of the projects are either funded by or are
directly related to ADNOC and the opcos’
needs
(c) To help senior undergraduate students
to appreciate the research component of
graduate studies at the PI and motivate
them to pursue a graduate degree after
completion of their undergraduate studies
Awards to the best oral and poster
presentations were given during the annual
graduate school dinner on 6 June 2012.
Research collaboration
Research collaboration with partner
universities was enhanced significantly during
2011 – 2012. PhD students from the University
of Minnesota and Rice University visited for a
period of several months and worked on joint
PI – Partner University research projects under
the supervision of PI faculty. In addition, faculty
members from various partner universities
visited PI to lecture to graduate students.
V. Future Plans/Initiatives
The PI is committed to develop its own PhD
program in various engineering disciplines in
the near future. The new PI Research Center
will be ready in early 2014 and – together
with the development of the labs and the
welcoming of some high-profile academics to
the PI - will ensure a truly high quality program.
Meanwhile, we will pursue further education
and research collaboration with our partner
universities.
