Support for Government Initiatives,
including:
o The creation of knowledge-based
economic growth for the future of the
UAE
o The mitigation of climate change by
reducing the UAE’s carbon footprint
o The security of the country’s supplies
of fresh water and energy

Establish an applied and R&D capability at
the PI to attract and train the next generation
of scientists and engineers for oil and gas
production.

Develop the PI’s R&D technical organization,
strategy, vision, mission and values. The
PI presented these plans to several stakeholders
including:
o The PI R&D Management Committee;
ADNOC Senior Management; the PI
Institutional Advisory and Governing
Boards.
o Partner and other universities and
research centers: Stanford, MIT,
UMN, University of Maryland, CSM,
Rice, University of Texas, Imperial
College, Heriot-Watt University,
Tokyo University, IFP, Partex, several
Portuguese universities, CNPC and a
Korean delegation to the PI.

and CO2 removal

Nanotechnology
o Intelligent Field Automation
o Catalysis & Nano-Particle Development

o Process System Engineering for
Simulation and Optimization
o Advanced PVT Properties and Molecular
Modeling of Complex Fluids

Develop 6 jointly applied R&D projects with
ADCO, beginning January 2012:
o Bab Habshan1 Critical Fluid Type
Compositional Modeling (ADCO Bab
Team)
o Experimental Study of Low Salinity WF,
Carbonated WF or Combination EOR in
Asab Thamama A/A0 Reservoirs
o Fracture Related Digenesis Evaluation
Study (ADCO Shah Team)
o Shah Simsima Geomechanical Study
(ADCO Shah Team)
o Thermodynamic Model Development
for the ADCO CO2 EOR Project (ADCO
Engineering)
o Thermodynamic Modeling Study to
confirm GOR Separator Calculations
for Bu Hasa for several Scenarios (Lean
Gas Stripping, Gas Left, etc.)

Work closely with CSM to develop the PI
Research Master Plan and Administration
Organization.

Continue building the PI research center
(anticipated completion date: Q3 2013).

Fund some internal research projects:
The PI also encourages and funds seed
projects to be conducted by faculty who
may engage the PI students for assistance.
This year-on-year activity not only
encourages interest in research among the
next generation of PI graduates but may
also lead to new findings and data which
can result in patentable information and
technology.
o In 2012 the PI has internally funded 47
such projects, worth AED 4.4 Million
o The following table shows the number
of projects funded by respective
engineering departments.
