A year of transformation, growth and success
Mrs. Omkalthoum El-Bashir obtained a BSc
(2003) and MSc (2011)
in Electrical Engineering
from UEA University.
After her first degree
she worked as an
Academic Assistant
in UAEU, where she
taught and delivered
tutorial sessions for engineering courses
and assisted undergraduate students in their
graduation projects. She has publications to
her credit in the area of wireless networks and
was awarded the Golden Card for Excellence
as an undergraduate. She joined the PI as a
Lab Engineer in the Electrical Engineering
Department in 2011.
Mr. Malik Abdul Haleem obtained a BSc
in Electrical and
Electronics Engineering
from Federal Urdu
University of Arts,
Science & Technology
(FUUAST), Islamabad
Pakistan. He also has
3-year Diploma of Associate Engineering
in Electronics. Currently he is working as a
Lab Technician in the Electrical Engineering
department at the PI.
Mr. Saikrishna Kanukollu completed a B.
Tech degree at JNT
University, India and
earned his M.Tech
from Indian Institute of
Technology Bombay,
with specialization in
Power Electronics and
Power Systems. Later he joined ABB and
worked as an Application Engineer in the
field of Energy Management Systems until
he joined the PI in 2011. His areas of interests
include Advanced Control of Electrical Drives,
Active Filters, DC/AC and DC/DC Converters.
IV. Current Initiatives
In order to encourage the students towards
research activities the IEEE student chapter
organized the IEEE Robotics Competition in
May 2012, and the IEEE Best Research Paper
Competition on the topic of Nuclear Energy
Lesson Learnt; Erum Mansoor won the best
paper award.
Collaborative Endeavors
The Department has hosted visiting research
assistants from several universities including
Mentouri University of Constantine, Algeria;
King Saud University, Saudi Arabia; the Electric
Power Research Institute, China; the Colorado
School of Mines, US and the Kitami Institute of
Technology, Japan.
Student Activities
1. PI-EE undergraduate students under the
guidance of Dr. Khalifa Hasan Al Hosani
participated in the World Future Energy
Summit (WFES) 2012. This was sponsored by
Emirates Foundation. EE graduate students
showcased their research activities in the
poster presentations and Dr. Khalifa Hasan
Al Hosani gave a podium presentation with
the title ‘The Journey towards a Smart
Renewable-Friendly Grid’.
2. EE senior students showcased their senior
design project in the 2012 Water, Energy,
Technology and Environment Exhibition
(WETEX) held by Dubai Electricity and
Water Authority (DEWA) in May 2012. Khalid
Atef, Ahmed Elsamary, Abdullah Wasfi and
Salem Alkaabi presented their ‘Smart House
Project’ in the exhibition. The students had
the opportunity to exchange their ideas
with professionals from companies like
ABB, SEIMENS, etc.
