The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 Department Of Chemical Engineering Dr. Ali Al Mansoori, Chair I. Executive Summary In 2011-2012, the Department of Chemical Engineering was strengthened with new faculty members and staff. The department also secured funding for a number of research projects from the university and from external funding agencies. Some faculty members hold distinguished positions and have been published in top-ranking international journals. II. Department Mission and Program Goals The Department of Chemical Engineering provides opportunities for young men and women to develop the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a rewarding and productive career in the chemical industries. The program aims to train chemical engineers with the comprehensive skills required to work and live effectively in the multicultural environment that pervades today’s global community. The specific goals and missions are to: • Develop strong technical skills, sound knowledge, and the highest level of competencies necessary to work effectively in the global engineering community; • Ascribe to the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental awareness; • Build communication skills to communicate effectively in engineering circles and in the international business community; • Strengthen collaborative working skills required to solve important engineering problems; • Provide opportunities to develop critical leadership skills required to lead engineering project teams; • Address key issues concerning engineering ethics; and 50
A year of transformation, growth and success • Afford opportunities for young adults to strengthen their social skills through extracurricular activities. The program features a summer internship in industry which offers students significant exposure to the petroleum and chemical processing industries in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. The department possesses state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment. Our laboratories include the Catalysis, Reaction Engineering and Process Intensification, Flow Assurance and Production Chemistry, Polymer Physics/ Chemistry, and the Environmental Chemistry laboratories. There are also dedicated facilities and software for computational work. III.
