與 觀 者 最 具 共 鳴 的 。 我 希 望 用 電 影 來 告 訴 人 們 , 現 在 世 界 上

雲 翔 開 始 了 艱 苦 的 學 習 , 他 參 加 了 許 多 洛 杉 磯 和 溫
哥 華 的 影 視 製 作 課 程 , 並 閱 讀 了 大 量 關 於 影 片 製
作 、 編 劇 、 攝 影 、 導 演 的 書 籍 , 甚 至 還 跑 去 參 加 了
表 演 課 程 。
在 做 了 充 份 的 準 備 工 作 之 後 , 李 雲 翔 的 第 一
部 紀 錄 片 投 入 拍 攝 。 他 走 訪 了 許 多 海 外 前 往 中 國
進 行 器 官 移 植 手 術 的 病 患 者 及 家 屬 , 獲 取 了 詳 實
的 第 一 手 資 料 ; 還 訪 問 了 加 拿 大 人 權 律 師 大 衛 .

二 位 當 年 也 是 難 以 相 信 此 事 , 直 到 開 始 進 行 獨 立
調 查 後 , 於 2006 年 向 全 世 界 發 佈 了 關 於 活 摘 法 輪

們 , 他 最 喜 歡 《 辛 德 勒 的 名 單 》 和 《 鋼 琴 家 》 這 類
電 影 , 話 題 沉 重 但 飽 含 著 人 性 的 希 望 , 讓 電 影 在 娛
樂 之 外 具 有 了 更 深 層 的 人 文 意 義 。
他 坦 言 , 在 得 知 信 仰 「 真 、 善 、 忍 」 的 法 輪
功 學 員 , 居 然 會 被 活 體 摘 除 器 官 去 販 賣 牟 利 時 , 他
覺 得 自 己 一 定 要 做 點 甚 麼 , 來 喚 醒 更 多 世 人 的 良 知
和 關 注 。 這 種 異 常 殘 酷 的 對 信 仰 團 體 群 體 滅 絕 的 做

儘 管 對 自 己 能 拍 攝 出 一 部 廣 受 好 評 的 影 片 感 到
欣 慰 , 但 說 起 製 作 過 程 的 艱 辛 , 李 雲 翔 也 是 感 慨 萬
千 。「 電 影 是 一 門 綜 合 的 藝 術 , 涉 及 的 環 節 和 藝 術
門 類 太 多 , 實 在 很 難 駕 馭 。」 對 於 目 前 許 多 年 輕 人
想 利 用 網 絡 平 臺 來 發 展 自 己 電 影 事 業 的 想 法 , 李 雲
翔 建 議 :「 想 要 拍 好 電 影 需 要 大 量 的 實 踐 , 趕 緊 拿
起 攝 像 機 去 不 斷 嘗 試 是 最 好 的 。」
採 訪 最 後 , 李 雲 翔 告 訴 我 們 , 他 正 在 拍 攝
一 部 新 的 紀 錄 片 。 這 個 故 事 說 的 是 一 位 中 國 東 北
的 女 性 , 因 堅 持 自 己 的 信 仰 , 而 無 辜 被 兩 次 判 刑
10 年 和 13 年 , 在 獄 中 飽 受 摧 殘 和 折 磨 。 她 後 來 穿
越 叢 林 逃 到 緬 甸 , 又 前 往 泰 國 尋 求 庇 護 , 最 終 輾
轉 來 到 溫 哥 華 。「 這 個 故 事 最 打 動 我 的 , 不 是 她
整 個 家 庭 因 信 仰 而 遭 受 迫 害 的 悲 慘 和 她 本 人 逃 亡
過 程 中 的 驚 心 動 魄 。 而 是 在 她 經 歷 了 如 此 多 的 不
幸 , 面 對 過 那 樣 的 逆 境 之 後 , 依 然 能 恪 守 著 人 性
中 的 善 意 。 和 她 交 流 的 過 程 中 , 我 感 受 不 到 怨 恨
消 極 的 情 緒 , 她 依 然 充 滿 了 希 望 , 並 關 懷 著 其 他
人 , 這 讓 我 非 常 感 動 , 希 望 這 部 新 片 能 早 日 與 觀
眾 見 面 吧 !」
was learning to work with and understand the
long-term employees, friends of his parents
who’d been at the company since the beginning.
This basic sense of empathy and ability to
see things through the eyes of the other person
guided him through the shoals of the complex
and new world of moviemaking.
Movie empathy
Lee’s empathy machine started to get a workout
in 2006 when shocking reports started popping
up in the overseas Chinese press. The stories
said that the Chinese security forces and military
hospitals were maintaining a blood-typed
database of detained religious prisoners, then
killing them on order to harvest their organs for
transplant tourists. The organs would be sold for
upwards of $100,000 each. Some reports said
that the victims were not even dead when their
organs were removed — that it amounted to extracting
organs from living people.
“I knew right then that I wanted to tell this
story,” Lee said.
It was his compelling exploration of this topic
that won Viewster’s fourth online video contest
last year. The judges wrote that the documentary
was “well-focused and chooses well-informed
individuals with a firsthand knowledge of the
dire situation in China, putting their cases forward
in a clear and gripping manner.”
How did the CEO of a medical-device firm
become an award-winning documentarian? The
opportunity to change careers came in 2006
and 2007 as he was emigrating from China,
marrying his Canadian-Chinese partner, and
relocating to Vancouver. Then there was study.
And practice.
“I systematically taught myself everything I
could learn about film: production, screenwriting,
cinematography, directing.” He attended
courses in Los Angeles and Vancouver, took online
programmes, read books, spoke to experts,
and slowly honed his skills.
Inspiration’s fount
So far, Lee’s documentaries and his first feature
film have all drawn from the same source
material: the astonishing persecution of practitioners
of Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a traditional
Chinese practice of meditation and
moral improvement that teaches adherents
to live their lives according to the principles
of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. In
1999, it became a political target.
“The thing about the persecution of Falun
Gong is that it’s one of the most serious
persecutions in the world — the scope is so
major, its aspects so vast — and yet there are
so few works that reflect the true face of the
persecution,” Lee said.
It’s the stories of compassion, kindness,
bravery, and the resilience of the human spirit
in the face of brutal persecution that he is
now working so hard to tell.
Lee’s next production is another storytelling
documentary about Falun Gong: Jing Tian’s
Escape, the journey of a Chinese woman who
in 2000 was sentenced to 10, then 13 years in
prison for her beliefs. Her whole family was
destroyed: Jing’s younger brother was hit with
a 10-year prison sentence. Her younger sister
got 13 years. Her mother was thrown into a
forced re-education camp for three years, dying
shortly after being released due to injuries
sustained from torture.
“Jing Tian escaped China through the jungles
of Burma, then went to Thailand as a refugee,
then came to Vancouver. This is the kind
of story I want to tell. It’s incredibly moving,
but people don’t know about it.”
How did Jing Tian get a 10, then 13-year
sentence, and is now outside of China? “That’s
why it’s called Jing Tian’s Escape — you have
to wait to see the film!”
