Division of threefold faiths<br />
TEXT 1<br />
arjuna uvaca<br />
ye sastra-vidhim utsrjya<br />
yajante sraddhayanvitah<br />
tesam nistha tu ka krsna<br />
sattvam aho rajas tamah<br />
Arjuna said: O Krishna, what is the situation of those who transgress the<br />
laws of scriptures but worship according to their own will? Are they in<br />
goodness, in passion or in ignorance?<br />
TEXT 2<br />
sri-bhagavan uvaca<br />
tri-vidha bhavati sraddha<br />
dehinam sa svabhava-ja<br />
sattviki rajasi caiva<br />
tamasi ceti tam srnu<br />
The Supreme Lord said: There are three kinds of faith according to the<br />
nature of the living entity. These are goodness(Satwika), passion(Rajasa), and<br />
ignorance(Tamas). Now listen in detail about these faiths.<br />
TEXT 3<br />
sattvanurupa sarvasya<br />
sraddha bhavati bharata<br />
sraddha-mayo 'yam puruso<br />
yo yac-chraddhah sa eva sah<br />
O Bharat, the faith of all living entities are according to their nature.<br />
Every living entity has some kind of faith. A person is determined by the kind of<br />
faith he has.<br />
TEXT 4<br />
yajante sattvika devan<br />
yaksa-raksamsi rajasah<br />
pretan bhuta-ganams canye<br />
yajante tamasajanah<br />
Men in the mode of goodness worship the demigods, those in the mode of<br />
passion worship the demons and those in the mode of ignorance worship the<br />
spirits and devils.<br />
