tat sukham rajasam smrtam<br />
Rajas happiness is that which arising from the union of the senses and<br />
the phenomenal objects appears to be ambrosial at the beginning, but is really<br />
poisonous in the long run.<br />
TEXT 39<br />
yad agre canubandhe ca<br />
sukham mohanam atmanah<br />
nidralasya-pramadottham<br />
tat tamasam udahrtam<br />
That happiness is mentioned a Tamasa which in the beginning as well as<br />
in the end causes infatuation of the soul and is born of sleep, indolence and<br />
inebriation.<br />
TEXT 40<br />
na tad asti prthivyam va<br />
divi devesu va punah<br />
sattvam prakrti-jair muktam<br />
yad ebhih syat tribhir gunaih<br />
There is no such being in the world, or demigods in the heaven that are<br />
possibly free from these triple qualities of material nature.<br />
TEXT 41<br />
brahmana-ksatriya-visam<br />
sudranam ca parantapa<br />
karmani pravibhaktani<br />
svabhava-prabhavair gunaih<br />
O Arjuna, the tormentor of enemies, the duties of Brahmanas, Kshatriyas,<br />
Vaisyas and Sudras are divided according to qualities innate in them.<br />
TEXT 42<br />
samo damas tapah saucam<br />
ksantir arjavam eva ca<br />
jnanam vijnanam astikyam<br />
brahma-karma svabhava-jam<br />
Control of internal and external organs of senses, austerity, purity,<br />
forbearance, simplicity, knowledge of the self and of Godhead as interpreted in<br />
the scriptures, and firm conviction, or faith in the real interpretation of the self,<br />
Godhead and matter are the characteristic qualities and duties of a Brahmana.<br />
TEXT 43<br />
sauryam tejo dhrtir daksyam<br />
yuddhe capy apalayanam<br />
danam isvara-bhavas ca<br />
ksatram karma svabhava-jam<br />
Heroism, pomp, patience, dexterity, not to turn away from the battle field,<br />
charity, governing the state, are the characteristic qualities and duties of a<br />
Kshatriya.<br />
