wisdom and is fit for immortality.<br />

TEXT 16<br />

nasato vidyate bhavo<br />

nabhavo vidyate satah<br />

ubhayor api drsto 'ntas<br />

tv anayos tattva-darsibhih<br />

There is no eternal existence of ephemeral things and there is no<br />

cessation of the eternal substance. So the knowers of the truth consider both of<br />

them separately.<br />

TEXT 17<br />

avinasi tu tad viddhi<br />

yena sarvam idam tatam<br />

vinasam avyayasyasya<br />

na kascit kartum arhati<br />

Know that the Jiva-soul which pervades the whole body is indestructible.<br />

No one is able to destroy this immortal soul.<br />

TEXT 18<br />

antavanta ime deha<br />

nityasyoktah saririnah<br />

anasino prameyasya<br />

tasmad yudhyasva bharata<br />

The material body of the eternal, indestructible and immeasurable soul is<br />

transient. Therefore, O scion of Bharata, get up to fight.<br />

TEXT 19<br />

ya enam vetti hantaram<br />

yas cainam manyate hatam<br />

ubhau tau na vijanito<br />

nayam hanti na hanyate<br />

He who thinks the (soul) slays, and who thinks he is slain, both of them<br />

know nothing at all, because the soul neither kills anybody nor is killed by<br />

anybody.<br />

TEXT 20<br />

na jayate mriyate va kadacin<br />

nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah<br />

ajo nityah sasvato 'yam purano<br />

na hanyate hanyamane sarire<br />

The soul has neither birth nor death. He was present in the past, he is<br />

present now and he will remain in the future. He is unborn, eternal, undying,<br />

ancient but ever fresh. He is not destroyed even if the body is killed.<br />

TEXT 21<br />

vedavinasinam nityam<br />
