O Partha, the fortitude in the mode of goodness is that which upholds the<br />
functions of mind, life, senses and actions with steadfast concentration.<br />

yaya tu dharma-kamarthan<br />
dhrtya dharayate 'rjuna<br />
prasangena phalakanksi<br />
dhrtih sa partha rajasi<br />
O Partha, the fortitude in the mode of passion is that which upholds<br />
religion, wealth and sense gratification with their fruitive desires.<br />

yaya svapnam bhayam sokam<br />
visadam madam eva ca<br />
na vimuncati durmedha<br />
dhrtih sa partha tamasi<br />
O Partha, the fortitude in the mode of ignorance is that which foolishly<br />
adheres to dream, fear, grief, sadness and inclination.<br />

sukham tv idanim tri-vidham<br />
srnu me bharatarsabha<br />
abhyasad ramate yatra<br />
duhkhantam ca nigacchati<br />
O best of the Bharatas, hear Me now about the three kinds of happiness<br />
by repeated cultivation of which one finds pleasure in it and attains the end of<br />
misery.<br />

yat tad agre visam iva<br />
pariname 'mrtopamam<br />
tat sukham sattvikam proktam<br />
atma-buddhi-prasada-jam<br />
Satwika happiness is that which is born of selfapprobation or realisation,<br />
and which, though difficult and unpleasant at the beginning, is yet nectarine<br />
and wholesome in the end.<br />
