sthita-prajnas tadocyate<br />

The Supreme Lord Sri Krishna said: O Partha, when a man gives up all<br />

sorts of mental desires and becomes contended in self with the realisation of<br />

the soul, he is said to be well-founded in wisdom.<br />

TEXT 56<br />

duhkhesv anudvigna-manah<br />

sukhesu vigata-sprhah<br />

vita-raga-bhaya-krodhah<br />

sthita-dhir munir ucyate<br />

A Jiva who is not perturbed in mind by calamities, who is in pleasure<br />

devoid of longing and from whom desire, fear and anger have departed is<br />

called a sage of steadfast wisdom.<br />

TEXT 57<br />

yah sarvatranabhisnehas<br />

tat tat prapya subhasubham<br />

nabhinandati na dvesti<br />

tasya prajna pratisthita<br />

He who has no attachments to anything and who does not rejoice nor<br />

hate, whether he finds good or evil is fixed in perfect knowledge.<br />

TEXT 58<br />

yada samharate cayam<br />

kurmo 'nganiva sarvasah<br />

indriyanindriyarthebhyas<br />

tasya prajna pratisthita<br />

When the wise man fully controls his senses from their objects as the<br />

tortoise withdraws its limbs, his knowledge is well-founded.<br />

TEXT 59<br />

visaya vinivartante<br />

niraharasya dehinah<br />

rasa-varjam raso 'py asya<br />

param drstva nivartate<br />

The sense-objects fall from the embodied soul when it ceases to feed on<br />

them, but the taste for them is left behind. Even the taste disappears when the<br />

Supreme Lord is seen.<br />

TEXT 60<br />

yatato hy api kaunteya<br />

purusasya vipascitah<br />

indriyani pramathini<br />

haranti prasabham manah<br />

O son of Kunti, the senses are so powerful and violent that they forcibly<br />

overpower the mind of even a wise man who strives to control them.<br />
